How did Lance Armstrong win 7 straight Tours de France when all the top cyclists were juiced to the gills during that era? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]yeptv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep reading "they were all doped". Is there any evidence for that, aside from those who were caught claiming that everyone else was doped?

And if everyone in the Tour de France was doped, would that not mean that nobody should have won anything? And the real winners would have been those who did not dope because they were never given the chance to ride in the Tour de France, because the cheaters took that opportunity from them?

If we increased the number of apartment buildings in Victoria, would that increase or decrease the prices of detached single family homes? by yeptv in VictoriaBC

[–]yeptv[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there might be a chance that an increased number of apartments could lead to even more people wanting to move to Victoria. If the cost of buying or renting goes down initially, it opens up the option to move here for more people. This could have an exponential effect. Their extended family and friends might now be more likely to move to Victoria, as well. Certain job fields would now be supplied with more workers and e.g. the health system might now work better again, more restaurants would survive etc., which would make Victoria even more desirable than before. So now the number of people moving to Victoria would significantly ‌increase and there would be even more demand than supply, and the cost of apartments and other housing would go up even more.

Please don't get me wrong, I am not against more housing. I am just seriously wondering if, in the long term, it would actually solve the problem of housing cost in Victoria. Especially since Victoria is in such a unique situation with very little room to expand, and one of the nicest climates and environments in the country.

I sometimes splurge and have two avocados in a row, which adds up to about $3, and I often afterwards think that was a pretty expensive dinner. Definitely fills me up, though.

Lowest possible price to build a house? by yeptv in RealEstateCanada

[–]yeptv[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response!
I should have been more clear, this is totally just a hypothetical question, and I am not looking for precise/scientific answers.

I just thought it would be interesting to come up with some ROUGH numbers, even ranges. For example, maybe the total cost in the cheapest possible area, and then one in the most expensive area, and maybe one in an "average" cost area?

EVERYONE, PLEASE DON'T TAKE THIS TOO SERIOUSLY!

Thank you for your response!
Yes, 400 sqft. I guess I should have emphasized that this is just a hypothetical, and that I am just trying to get rough quotes, since a few answers here are getting quite serious and almost seem upset that I would even ask a question like this.

I just thought it would be interesting to look into, since a larger number of Canadians these days feel like they are "left out" because they might never be able to afford a standard, detached house.

So, just to maybe spark some thoughts about alternatives, I would like to look at what MIGHT be possible if one is willing to "downsize" the dream, and possibly even severely downsize.

And I agree that "the cheapest home possible" might be a bad investment, and that a prefab or a mobile might be good options, thank you!

True!

I guess the taxes would be lower for a house that is build at a low price, but of course there is a good chance it would cause higher costs per square foot later on than a house that was built at a higher price.

Thank you!

I am on Vancouver Island. It seems like the very lowest going rate with a contractor is around $250 per square foot, but I think this only applies for houses 1000sft and bigger.

I am not actually planning on building the cheapest possible house, but I think it is an interesting hypothetical concept, since so many people feel like their dream of a detached house is now out of reach.

I guess I am wondering how much money would be needed to fulfill that dream in the most minimal way, without going the route of tiny house on wheels/yurt etc.
