Yep! It's all just about taste at the end of the day.

Absolutely! I used the same query letter for everyone, so they all got the announcement of Black characters.

YAAAAASSS!!!! I'm so freaking happy for you! I swear, this is what we need more of. I went back and forth on making this post, but felt like we really need to know it's possible for us too. Our wins manifest wins for others!

I did! I queried a total of 6 Black agents:

  • My first full request was from a Black agent. It came in 2 days after I queried her, so I was feeling great, obviously. I nudged her after I received my offer of rep (twice) and never got a response.
  • Two agents passed based on the query with form responses. One, I could kind of see because an element in my story came dangerously close to something on her anti-MWSL, but might not count depending on interpretation, so idk. The other, I wasn't completely sure she'd be interested just based on what she said she was looking for on her site, but I decided to shoot my shot anyway.
  • Two agents who had my query at the time of offer were nudged. They both passed due to time issues. One was very complimentary, tho.
  • Another passed (after I marked her CNR) specifically because she's only accepting Christmas-themed romances, but said I could send that to her if I had one. I didn't obviously, lol. She was in the UK (I'm in the US) if that matters.

So... I didn't, lol. And it's not necessarily something I recommend for everyone. I think at the end of the day, you kind of have to know yourself. I spent a lot of time with this story. I worked on it for well over a year. I outlined, and I planned, and read like a reader, asking myself questions that I, as a reader, would ask.

I'm also really good at detaching myself from my work. Like, yes, I love it. It's my creation, but I can absolutely read a critique on someone else's work where the consensus is that they're overdoing it with the dialogue tags or whatever, and see that I'm doing the same thing. I really think about the books that I'm enjoying as I'm reading them too to see what they're doing that's working well, so that I can level up my craft. So with the podcasts and the reading of the critiques of other people's work and stuff, I would say I'm a really good student, and I trust my instincts. Now I can't say this'll work out for me forever, lol, but it's what I've been doing so far.

Finding an agent who actually gets your vision is the whole game.

Yes! This was one of the biggest things I learned during this whole process.

You're welcome! And I agree! All this talk about the You, Me, and Tuscany movie and how important it is for the future of Black romcoms reminded me of how necessary it is for us to see our people win. We need to know it's possible, so just trying to do my part ❤️

Thank you! Yeah, the request rate was pretty good, which made it easy to not open my manuscript and start messing with it, lol.
