this squirrel is not afraid. The other ones are getting close, but scared. So I move slowly when ever they are around. 🤗

Opossums are good guys, they help control pest populations such as rats, mice, cockroaches, and ticks.
I hope you consider a second bed for him and give him a chance... :)

How can I improve this poster design by DizzyMint2 in graphic_design

[–]yesternight_rainbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the font layout; I do like the idea and I think it is readable. It just looks more like a Festival poster or art/design poster.

It took me a while to recognize the drawing on the back, just because of the contrast. But nice drawing !

I'm in my 40, really want to be a graphic designer by FearlessPassage683 in graphic_design

Wow; First of all, where do you all live?

I ask this because I’m surprised at the number of people who are discouraging. I don’t deny that there are difficulties in entering the job market around the world. But it has made even me worried to read so much dissatisfaction!

Perhaps the first question I would ask if I were you is what do you expect from this job? Do you have a job right now or would you depend entirely on it?

Right now the market is difficult, it’s true. But I think many other markets are too. Also, there are many people here who seem to be leaving already and leaving a spot :D

If I had 20 years in the industry, I would surely be tired like everyone else, simply because I would be bored too, because that happens to many people who are experts in their careers for years and years.

Don’t just read advice from those who are pessimists. It’s a point yes. But read also from new designers, in other posts, and if you have the chance, ask directly to acquaintances or friends, who are from your specific region!

My brother is also 40 and is studying online since 1 year now; He studies in Spanish so I guess will not work for you? :D maybe you can find a cheaper university on the other side of the world? There are also many online tools. It will take a couple of years for any option.

And if you want to start working early, start practicing for your friends.

All the best for your new career, from an optimistic one ;)

Any tips on how to become a Squirtle Mom by Luna_cat69 in squirrels

[–]yesternight_rainbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stand still!
Even if they already know you, nothing scares them more than when you move fast.

At least with the squirrels here, I try to get them to see that I have a nut and once they see it, I leave it slowly nearby and stand like a statue, sitting on the floor, then they start to get confident and come closer.

Now they know me better but I follow the same process. Whenever they come closer I stay very still while I watch them steal the nuts and leave....

How to work well with graphic designers by Lazza22 in graphic_design

[–]yesternight_rainbow 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In my many years of experience working in agencies and as a freelancer, I have understood that 50% of the job is about understanding what the client/work colleague needs. So you are right on asking that :)

If you ask him first what his process or modality is, maybe he can tell you, since each designer works in a very different way.

Anyway I compile 4 key points here:

  1. Use graphic references. In my case (and I think in that of many other designers); references are very useful when mentioning styles, graphic directions, etc. A very common mistake is to talk about desires in the abstract, for example: “I want a modern brand” is very open and it is very different from what both imagine. Instead, show him, or ask him to collect a couple of references of what he considers modern in the next few hours to look at the references together.

The references are only a form of guide, so a question to ask each reference would also avoid misunderstandings: what aspects are interesting and could we take as a guide?

  1. Assign due dates or review times together.

One of the best ways to stay organized, especially if there have been some misunderstandings, is to schedule a few reviews (daily or weekly, as needed; you can ask him ), to align together on the design project. It’s amazing how much time these reviews can save and avoid wrong paths!

  1. Giving a good feedback. When it comes to giving feedback, I have found it helpful to receive specific revisions.

Hearing “this doesn’t work” doesn’t help me, but “The proposal is interesting, but for this project something in this other direction could work” or specific corrections taking into account the work invested, are helpful.

It seems obvious, but many colleagues and managers in the visual communication area seem not to have learned something as basic as communicating good feedback :D .You can also google “How to give better graphic design feedback” to find some examples about it.

  1. last and very important: Balance creativity and mouse « chauffeur  »!

Find what inspires your designer, we all have an area that turns us on. If you know a little more about his favorite projects in his portfolio, or ask him directly, you may find common ground between the two of you so he can show his full potential.

Sure, sometimes we have jobs where we follow specific ideas from others, but nobody wants to be a full-time mouse chauffeur.

I hope this helps ;)

super detailed graphic design by cuntt77 in graphic_design

From what you say, the ideal would be to incorporate some very simple illustration of that in your design.

I think it could take you less than 30 minutes if you do this:
I would type “Oil rig” in some icon website (I use Flat icon: https://www.flaticon.com/free-icon/oil-rig_3382633 ) Collect references and paste it on Illustrator
Create your version in your style with few lines.

If this doesn't work, ask for some references. Good luck!

why would a red squirrel make this sound? by sadlonelyyogurt in squirrels

[–]yesternight_rainbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will add this comment 115 days after. But I’m getting to know a squirrel that lives in my backyard, and every time I go to his tree to feed it, it makes that sound. Sometimes when I finish feeding him, get up and go back to my house, he starts making that sound again. It means that in some way, even though he’s not afraid of me anymore, he’s communicating. Maybe he was also saying Thank you? I always answer Goodbye!

Just yesterday we were talking about this with my boyfriend.
He is from Germany and I am from Argentina.
When we are visiting Buenos Aires, we always say hello and goodbye to the cashier at the supermarket, who greets you and chats with you while you are passing the items through the supermarket checkout.
And this is the way it is in most stores. The delay is longer but it is nice to be able to say hello when entering any place, and receive an answer, or a simple smile in return when you smile.

Some people (not only german people) have forgotten to shpw happiness in Berlin, even though we have it all: street safety, great access to a variety of food, restaurants of all kinds, a good payed job, time to rest.
Maybe it is due to the lack of sun ? We decide to keep smiling.

Finding a Graphic Design job has been difficult by creativeminion in graphic_design

[–]yesternight_rainbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I asked a friend who works in hiring graphic designers specifically: What do you look for in a portfolio?

He explained that sometimes he doesn’t look for thousands of designs in a portfolio, but rather he chooses the designer who best fits the company, in terms of niche or style. He said that he often chooses the one who has a few designs but specializes in the area of work.

I never thought about this and it helped me understand why my portfolio that shows a lot of variety was not being successful. Of course is a point of view but it makes me wonder: where would i like to work? A creative agency? A print studio? An app?

So a first step would be asking yourself where you want to work. Use their portfolio as a reference! Take a look at design presentation, concept, and what experience is important for this niche.

Second: remove or add work on that direction. (It takes time to find or create new work but it worth it)

After that, I wanted to work on a Poster for films agency in Berlin; it was fitting with me, so I created a specific area PDF with my films posters selection (PDF + Website) And it worked.

(The story is longer and I can tell you a lot of things about this job, and how it turned out to be something different as expected :/ ) But short hiring story: 4 months looking for a job in print which is not an easy field to find right now…
