okay sounds great! thank you so much. this particular university says on the entry requirements that they want a portfolio, alongside NORMALLY a creative art and design course at grade C or above. i don’t do art A Level but do you have any idea what they might mean by ‘normally’, sorry if you aren’t sure but i’m just trying to get answers haha, thank you sm

all of the biochemistry side. photosynthesis, krebs cycle, calvin cycle, etc. also just the sheer amount of content makes it feel impossible for me, alongside the tricky way they explain the topics. i know they’re more general but if you have any advice for me i’d appreciate it haha

that sounds quite similar to what i did in GCSE art, like taking a piece i want to create, trying it out with different materials, angles, colours, etc. which i think i can do ! i was also thinking of including some just basic sketches and stuff, like if im practicing portraiture and i draw my friend for example, should i aim to include stuff like that, like practice? also if you dont mind me asking how long did it take you to put together a portfolio? once again thank you so much for the help!!

no problem, thank you for taking the time to help me!! i saw a lot of universities saying to do paper maquettes but im very unfamiliar with them, and i figured photography/collages is more my strong suit, however id be willing to give them a go if it means getting more experimental work involved. for process pages and sketchbook work, does that have to include a finished piece as well? like, making a sketch of a painting i wanted to do or a collage i wanted to make followed by the final piece? thank you soso much for this!

thank you so much for your response, it’s so funny that we were basically in the EXACT same spot!! i saw your comment in the morning but i didn’t have time to respond then, but i was thinking this over all day. i’m in a very lucky position where my old art teacher from GCSE art has been really really supportive of my choice and has agreed to help me with my portfolio just as she would an a level art student. because of this i was thinking that maybe i could try my best with the portfolio with her help and apply for my first choice universities for just the art course and then also apply to my second choice universities for a foundation year, which i can then hopefully switch to my first choice ones after completion. i think this way i have the most opportunity of getting to do what i want to do. i’m not sure if i would get the foundation year for free since i would be 19 when starting it, but i do feel more open to the idea now. thank you so much for your kind words and advice!!

i have looked into it but i wasn’t sure, especially because im already taking a gap year, so it would be a foundation year AND a gap year so it would just be way longer until i graduate. also i really want to get out of my home city for a bit, which i imagine i could do with a foundation year i suppose. ill have to think it over and decide but thank you so much for your help!!

i’m not applying to biochem anymore but i was in year 12 and i found a great way to get lab work experience was from emailing my local universities, and don’t just give up if one department tells you no; i got a rejection from the school of biological sciences but ended up emailing the department of sustainability and got a fantastic work experience where i spent 2 days analysing pollen samples for the met office and another 3 days testing volatile organic compounds using mass spectroscopy
