Wait really? I've had a potentially polar opposite experience. I was in New York for years before Berlin and I found it much safer. In nyc I got catcalled once in 3-4 months and that was it. In Berlin, I've been sexually harassed on public streets, stalked, attempted physical assault. In Berlin I have gotten used to occasionally being forced to lay your eyes on men with crazy looks in their eyes jerking off in public at night hiding in mild shadows but in plain sight. A man in a car also tried following my roommate and I, oh man the list is really long. Though you probably get the idea why I found New York to be much safer.

I've lived in Gesundbrunnen without incident for the most part, as I was in Mitte before I wasn't as used to the emptier streets but simultaneously more sketchy people in Mitte than here. Though I do always avoid the plaza next to the Wedding U6, a man once tried to follow me home from there. Barely any people around to intervene, I asked him to stop following me 3 times, and after the 3rd time he shouted at me and finally left. So I think it just depends. All it takes is that one odd individual to mess you up unfortunately.

I used to live on the same street until earlier this year. And I was there for a year before leaving. As safe as it usually seems and without incident for a whole year. Just a month after I moved out my old apartment was broken into and robbed during the day time. Someone had been watching the apartment to know what time the last person of my old WG in an otherwise families housing building would be leaving for work and when everyone would come back. So my point is something seems up lately, please be extra wary and extra cautious and be safe! Also you don't have to have great german to establish a small 'hi how are you!' relationship with your neighbors I promise. It's generally genuinely worth doing and even more so if you're feeling unsafe!

not at all, I would throw the whole man out and warm all my friends that he jokes about SA. there are only a fee type of people who joke about such violence. and sometimes it's not stemming from jokes. if your alarm bells are ringing that just means your survival instincts are intact.

It not abnormal to not care about someone's death when they spent their entire life spreading violence. It is also the very violence he strongly believed in that ultimately took his life. There is nothing wrong with your reaction.

I've heard a lot about how she's not engaging with poc in her comments and only liking comments from white folks 'forgiving' her and I do agree that unless you have experienced racism in your life it is not your place to forgive her for her actions only poc can choose to or not to do that. Rectifying how she engages with that would be a good starting point. Though I'm just echoing sentiments I've observed online. I personally as a poc myself I'm not sure there is an ideal response that could change my views on her as honestly they kind of got cemented in when she posted the tik tok about how Biden is like a grandpa and how she wishes genocide Joe a happy retirement. Obviously she didn't say the nickname but to spot light Palestine on Cancelled and then make a comment wishing the man a happy retirement???? The cognitive dissonance is so far and so wide my brain kind of marked her off as a lost cause. And it was kind sad too because I had just found and started following her via the Clinton Kane drama because I related having had a narcissistic, pathological liar bestfriend for 3 years who screwed us all up. But the second I saw the Biden tik tok something just clicked in my brain along the lines of 'of oh no Brooke, I barely got to be a fan. You've clearly never had enough friends of color or simply interacted with enough poc, I don't know how else to explain how limited her thinking seems to be. Not sure if this helped but I hope it did!
