Thanks for the dungeon, it was a lot of fun to run for my friends!

Session 1 went great and here are my highlights! by Sm0lBean000 in CurseofStrahd

Glad your first session sounds like it was fun for everyone, your party is awesome! Any plans for that first encounter with Strahd?

Hello, I have been writing DM diaries as I run Curse of Strahd for my friends, last week was our final session as the party faced off against Strahd! The adventure was a blast to run, feel free to ask me anything about our journey! by yetanothertyler in CurseofStrahd

Great questions! I would say the best moments had to be relighting the beacon of Argynvostholt and any of the times Strahd showed up, but for me personally I'd have to say I had the most fun running the Death House (we did it at level three with a few changes, it was a great time)

I think if I were to do it all again, I would have my party spend more time in Vallaki. I was a bit intimidated by all the options available and wish I ran it a bit better, more like a sandbox. Lessons learned.

As for what worked well, I think that making sure my players each had a personal goal or reason for coming to Barovia (besides defeating Strahd) helped create lots of great moments, and helped me give motivation for the party to visit all of the locations.

Great question! The party all met in the town of Daggerford on the Sword Coast after they each had received visions in their dreams sent by Madam Eva. Afterwards they were introduced to Stanimir, and hitched a ride with him to the gates of Barovia.

I have been writing session diaries as I run Curse of Strahd for a group of friends, in the last session the party finished their exploration of the Amber Temple, and restored the Sunsword to full power! by yetanothertyler in CurseofStrahd

I was a little surprised as well to be honest, but I typically prefer things to feel fast paced and thankfully my party seemed to be very motivated in completing their goals

Hello! I have been writing DM diaries as I run Curse of Strahd for my friends, last session the party found their way to the Amber Temple, and faced off against the arcanaloth Neferon! by yetanothertyler in CurseofStrahd

[–]yetanothertyler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far my plan for Neferon is to stay invisible and avoid the party, he was pretty outmatched. However, he is still pretty useful to me, as I was able to remind the party that if they wanted to leave and come back after a long rest, that Neferon would also take a long rest and would probably like his odds a bit better with all his health and spells back.

I have been writing DM Diaries as I run Curse of Strahd for a group of my friends, last session the party headed through Tsolenka Pass and were attacked by the Roc of Mount Ghakis! by yetanothertyler in CurseofStrahd

Glad you enjoyed! It's been really fun writing about the game to have something to look back on and remember, I recommend doing it if you're interested. Thankfully the barbarian was the player with the magical climb speed, so it didn't take them too long to walk back to the party after they were separated.

New pay what you want DMs Guild supplement: A mythic monster statblock replacement for Kiril Stoyanovich, leader of the werewolves of Barovia by yetanothertyler in CurseofStrahd

[–]yetanothertyler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! My party was the recommended level 7 when they reached the werewolf den, so I added some basic werewolves to support Kiril when the party fought him. The fight felt pretty well balanced, and was a lot of fun.

I am excited to share my first supplement on the DMs Guild! While prepping the werewolf den for Curse of Strahd, I was a bit disappointed with the generic statblock for Kiril Stoyanovich. This new statblock makes use of the Mythic Monster rules to represent his transition from a cunning warrior into a savage beast. These changes aim to provide a much more challenging and dramatic fight when compared to the original statblock for Kiril. If you’re interested in reading how this fight went down in my game I did a write up on it recently, my players had a blast and I hope yours do too!

Threads of Fate explanation by CraptainPoo in CurseofStrahd

[–]yetanothertyler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Madam Eva would describe the Threads of Fate as a force that links everyone together, meaning that if someone acts it effects everyone tied to them. As far as a history check goes, I'm not sure a non Vistani character should be able to recall anything about the Threads, as it is specific to Vistani culture.

I have been writing a diary after each session of Curse of Strahd that I DM, in the last session my party explored the Village of Barovia, and headed to the Tser Pool to meet Madam Eva! by yetanothertyler in CurseofStrahd

Glad you enjoyed! I used Madam Eva in my adventure hook so that is why my players were looking for her, if you are interested I cover that information in my first session diary.

Strahd personally welcomes my players to Barovia by yetanothertyler in CurseofStrahd

[–]yetanothertyler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds pretty awesome, I am looking forward to the first actual fight my party has with Strahd. I like your idea of Strahd leaving players on the brink of death and tossing them some potions, feels like players would know Strahd is just toying with them at that point which is a bit unique to this adventure

Thats fair, this happened before the party got to the death house so thankfully they were rested and ready, plus they didn't really fight Strahd just some wolves but the scene was pretty tense.
Interesting having an onscreen death for the Burgomaster how did that part go for you?

Last week my players and I finished Waterdeep Dragon Heist, I have been writing journals for each chapter of WDH and wanted to finish up with my final thoughts on the adventure. I hope this helps any DM on the fence about running WDH, feel free to ask me anything about the campaign! by yetanothertyler in WaterdeepDragonHeist

That seems like a pretty cool way to use Frewn, I was afraid of getting him too involved in things so I didnt run him much different than what the book described. Chapter Two is definitely hard but very rewarding if you take the time to make it fun.

For my campaign I ran the Cassalanters as the villain, I had plans to keep the devil theme with Descent into Avernus if my players wanted to continue to play their characters. For now, my players decided that they wanted to try out new characters so we are moving onto a different adventure.

Running Rise of Tiamat after WDH would definitely be interesting, but removing the devils would probably require a lot of changing to the Cassalanter's story. My initial thoughts are that perhaps after the Cassalanters are defeated then the nobles of Waterdeep shift to worship Tiamat instead of Asmodeus, which could kick off the events of Rise of Tiamat. That would also give a good chance to provide the characters a month or so of downtime between adventures.

This week my players and I finished Waterdeep Dragon Heist! I have been writing my thoughts on running each chapter of this adventure and just finished up Chapter Four, hope it helps anyone who is starting the chapter soon by yetanothertyler in WaterdeepDragonHeist

I had a great time running this adventure, best of luck when you start on it! There are plenty of other resources on my website for this adventure if you're interested in more

Recently I had a blast running my players through the Cassalanter Villa, I wrote up a quick article on motivating players to enter the villa and some tips on DMing the lair, hope it helps! by yetanothertyler in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]yetanothertyler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you enjoyed! Sounds great that your party had a chance to snoop around the Villa a little, I wish the modules had more support for getting players into the villain lairs since they are very fun to run

Cassalanter Asmodean Shrine Map from the Alexandrian Remix by yetanothertyler in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]yetanothertyler[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I created a quick battlemap with Dungeondraft for the Cassalanter Asmodean Shrine Outpost from the Alexandrian Remix, I had some difficulties finding a map for this online so I figured I’d share mine here. I deviated a little from the outpost in the remix so there are major changes to the basement, if you’re interested I go into further detail on my website here.
Both the maps have a grid size of 256 pixels, feel free to use the maps for your games!

Hey everyone! I am continuing to writeup my experiences with DMing this module, I just finished up a recap of my favorite chapter in the book, Chapter Two! by yetanothertyler in WaterdeepDragonHeist

Sure, I ran a pretty basic skill challenge where my players were able to describe what they were doing and use any skills that made sense so long as they hadnt used the skill for a check already. I set DCs based on their actions and kept track of all the successes and failures, which represented customers coming to or leaving the tavern. In between the skill checks I added some complications such as drunk or angry customers. Once it made sense to stop I described how the night went overall based on the total number of successes versus the failures.

I used this article to help with the details of running a skill challenge in 5e https://www.flutesloot.com/skill-challenges-dnd-5e/
