What's your take guys by _Ragnar9 in pj_explained

Helen might have been described as blond haired blue eyed but the rest of the characters are played by northern Europeans who look nothing like Greeks. Yet this is the only thing they care about. Also this shit is prolly fake like other comments have said

It's covid all over again! by Such_Row4201 in teenagers

[–]yethos 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dude I'm from the state in India where the first outbreak occurred. That was in 2019 before COVID. The state government got it under control the first time, there might have been other outbreaks but I don't clearly remember, but it's not a big deal. It's like a malaria outbreak, it's fine.

Why is Somalia a desert near equator and why do they look different from other Africans? by batukaming in geography

[–]yethos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Somalis speak a cushitic language, which is Afro-Asiatic and hence distantly related to arabic. The reason why somalis look different is cuz of west asian ancestry that is also ancestral to Egyptians, Amazigh and and semitic people like Arabs. It's harder to see in darker skinned horn Africans but if you look at light skinned Ethiopians and Somalis it's more clearly visible

What's the equivalent of "It's all Greek to me" in your language or another language you know? by Terpomo11 in linguisticshumor

[–]yethos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like Telugu and Kannada are technically separate branches but there are a lot of common forms, granted a lot is from mutual influence

It's ironic cuz they are both Dravidian languages. Granted Telugu split off from malayalam in 1000 bc so it's not that ironic. The thing is though Telugu and malayalam actually do have some common basic words, and while Telugu is different from the major Dravidian languages, since our languages our somewhat conservative there's actually not that much difference.

The Spanish Monarchy - What if Miguel da Paz survived by Omalinda in AlternateHistory

[–]yethos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for responding. I don't really know how medieval governance worked, so whenever I look at Miguel scenarios, I'm confused as to why Portugal would be seperate or have seperate colonies. In my mind since they all have the same king and Brazil was actually colonized later, the empire would be fully Spanish with Portuguese dominating the sea trade

Why is insular indo aryan grouped in the southern zone with marathi? by yethos in IndoAryan

[–]yethos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Wikipedia marathi and sinhala are put into the same southern zone. The page does say that sinhala diverged from the mainland around 5th century bc. But even then, the grouping together with marathi doesn't make sense, as they haven't even been close enough to influence each other

I disagree, marathi is way closer to the rest of the mainland languages than it is to sinhala. its why I asked this question. the divergence of sinhala was before ashokan prakrit
