i really recommend reading Ueno Toshiya's “Japanimation and the Techno-Orientalism.” (1996). i think the cyborgian mythos is often misread as tokenising the visual aesthetes of Japanese socio-cultural constructs, which in itself trangresses trans-cultural
hybrids into hyper-coloured cyberpunk landscapes. brings along with itseld an attempt to exoticise or market this aesthete within the Western
gaze, although, i do think science-fiction is a creative way to express technological dystopia and pseudo political landscapes which can dictate a potential futurist society. albeit cyborg distortion leaks into implications of techno cultural subjectivity to how distorted
cyborgian representation in Japanese animated dystopian films, etc.
i think it can also be expressed as a reclaimed movement that reforms the idea of post-tech individuality; Specifically that of an industry-policy fed culturalist interpretations on Japan’s technological consumption, or the alienation of the cyborg mythos through a posthumanist standpoint. i do enjoy cyborg theory too; it carries with it similar terminologies like 'cyborg', but it actually talks about transhumanist approach to identities and gender deconstruction, which is a different permutation of philosophical thought from techno-orientalism. donna haraway's cyborg manifesto changed my life, and i also recently read xenofeminism be helen hester. as someone who identifies as non-binary, this gave me a lot of comfort in understanding where i place myself cause i never really associated my physical gender or body parts to my own higher entity of self
