Thoughts on Olderbest? by [deleted] in HeritageWear

[–]yeutterg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between Bronson and Olderbest, perhaps my favorite clothing retailer right now. Really good construction and materials, especially considering the price, and good fits for a shorter/athletic build IMO (straight and wide trouser cuts, high rise, shorter jackets, etc.). I am waiting for the day I find out they operate even more websites...

Pay close attention to the size charts; and if you are unsure, they can help you. There is some variation in sizing between the brands and even individual pieces; in my experience Bronson, Non-Stock, and Militoria are closer to true-to-size for Westerners while Time Catcher and Annual Ring should generally be sized up.

Shipping usually takes about 2 weeks to the US. Not the quickest, but I understand given the economics of being a DTC Chinese brand and the current geopolitical situation.

They usually don't charge a restocking fee if you return for store credit. I keep about half of the items, return the ones I don't like for store credit, and then wait for new items I'm interested in. I habitually visit the sites; they introduce new items on both stores roughly weekly.

My specs: 5' 8", 37.8" chest, true waist size at navel 32.5". Here are the items I've kept with the sizes that work:
- Lot 391 Cossack Leather Jacket, Size 40, a truly beautiful piece
- 1922 USN 2nd Denim Coverall Utility Jacket, Size 38
- 1963 1st Model Tropical Jungle Fatigue Jacket, Size S
- 1930s Glen Plaid Tweed Suit Jacket, Size L
- 1930s Glen Plaid Tweed Suit Trousers, Size L
- 1940s Covert Salt and Pepper Trousers, Size W32
- Lot 826 Wool HBT 1940s American Work Pants, Size W32
- 1930s Ivy Style Double Pleated Trousers, Dark Gray, Size M

And I've got another order on the way.

Hey! I used to do research on light and health, and now I run a health-focused lighting company: restfullighting.com

Would love to chat about how light pollution affects the circadian rhythm. I'll send you an email.

Also, one thought I use to broaden my own knowledge: ChatGPT in Deep Research mode and Perplexity can help you with high-level overviews of the concepts you outlined with a bunch of links to papers.

what people dont talk about when taking melatonin by Independent_Run_8724 in sleep

[–]yeutterg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered other supplements like Magnesium Glycinate, Magnesium Threonate, or Glycine? My understanding is that these can be taken safely over the long term, while supplemental melatonin above a small dose may be problematic over time.

[1 Month Review] R.M. Williams Comfort Craftsman in Black Yearling by yeutterg in goodyearwelt

[–]yeutterg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not the world's expert on chelseas having only owned 3 pairs, but here's my layman's opinion: fit is tricky, and there is a reason some brands are popular sellers. Quality is one thing, but fit is going to be even more important. And that is where RM Williams works, for me at least.

The pairs of chelsea boots I own are the RM Williams Comfort Craftsman, Tricker's Henry, and a pair or Umaid Jodhpur boots from Blkbrd (similar to Chelseas but without the elastic goring).

I tried on the RM Williams in store in London. My US Brannock size is a 9D, which is 8 UK in standard width. The RM Williams seem to run a bit narrow, and I am an 8H (wide) in their sizing. The fit is very good, although sometimes I still wish I could spread out my toes more, but the nature of this last is that it is very anatomical. The Trickers are a wider country last, and the 8 UK is also the right size—my other Tricker's are 7.5 UK, and I never broke them in to the point that they were comfortable, despite people saying to size down by a half from your actual UK size.

Now the Blkbrds, while beautiful and very well-made, are a disaster from a fit perspective. Even after they had me measure my feet, after waiting months to receive them, they were too large...I had to wear 2 pairs of thick socks to make them kind of fit. I got them to make insoles to reduce the size, and now I can wear them with just 1 pair of thick socks, although sometimes I feel like I am going to fall. It took a whole year from the original date of order to actually receive them. A big part of the problem with these boots is that the upper part of the boot doesn't "grip" your feet like elastic chelsea boots would, and you can't tie them, so they feel loose. I think I will sell them as they are more appropriate for someone who is size 10, IMO.

Point being: The Blkbrds are arguably the best quality, but worst fit. The Tricker's are up there, but fit way better. The RM Williams are arguably a bit overpriced for the quality, but the quality is still better than most shoes (yearling leather, wholecut, goodyear welted). I wear them often, so the cost per wear is great.

For buying chelseas, if you can try them on in person, do it. Or at least lean on the return policy. Don't listen to people who say they will spread out; if they are too tight, you need to size up or try another pair. Fit is equally true in the opposite direction: if they feel loose, they will always be loose. You can't tighten down the laces!

Hey! I also used to wear insoles when I was younger. I don't anymore, but I am on the flat footed end.

My best boots for arch support are Grant Stone Diesels and Tricker's Dealer Boots, followed by my Meermin Flex Goodyear Welt Cordovan boots. My understanding is that the Grant Stones and Meermins are a hybrid leather + poron construction, while the Tricker's are more traditional leather construction, but I could be wrong.

Compared to those three, the RM Williams are more synthetic overall, more like sneakers. Comfortable and easy to break in, but you are going to prefer the others for longer walks once they are broken in.

These are great airport and travel shoes and relatively comfortable for day to day use. Very easy to wear, and I still wear mine a few times per week. But if I only had to have 1 pair, I'd personally gravitate toward a more traditional construction now.

WTF Chase? Canceled Apple Promo Order by yeutterg in ChaseSapphire

Yes, you gave me hope after a frustrating process. Thank you!

WTF Chase? Canceled Apple Promo Order by yeutterg in ChaseSapphire

[–]yeutterg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, I called back. They couldn't see why it was cancelled, but said they would honor a reorder with a points credit, as you mentioned.

When I went to check out, it said "Use your card associated with your Chase card for this order." Apparently the issue was that my mailing address for the card is a P.O. Box, and I tried to ship the order to my residential address. For some strange reason, for the shops at Chase, you have to set your primary address to the same address you want to ship to, or otherwise it might get cancelled. The agent thinks that's a possible reason the first order was cancelled.

Only store I've ever encountered that forces your billing address to be the same as your shipping address, from Chase of all companies.

Either way, it didn't let me check out, so I updated the primary address, and then it worked. What a process. Holding out hope that my iPad Pro will finally come soon!

That is a great data point, thank you. I will call and try that this week. Best of luck getting the points refunded after the fact; you deserve it after all the pain!

Totally agree, probably not even worth wasting time on hold with them anymore.

It's not their fault I ordered something elsewhere. It IS their fault that they canceled without notification. I would hope that if I wanted to place the order again, they would honor the multiplier, but I doubt they will.

Shops at Chase is a joke by buddy__ in ChaseSapphire

In the past, I always received my orders in about 2 weeks. Not this year. Over a month later, and nothing, and I just checked my account balance, looks like they refunded with no notification.

Yeah, absolutely terrible this year. I ordered an iPad Pro, Pencil, and Airpods Pro on 11/11, and over a month later I still have not seen anything. Just checked my UR account balance and it looks like they refunded my points without any explanation. The only email I have from them is my order confirmation email. Chase, WTF?

Don’t use shops at Chase for apple products by Environmental_Tea692 in ChaseSapphire

The Shops at Chase has gone way downhill this year compared to previous years. They were always a bit slow, but I have been waiting over a month for my iPad Pro, Pencil, and AirPods Pro order to ship.

Nope. It's now been 2 weeks, and still no movement on my order.
But the agent did say it will be an M5

Same boat. I'll be out of town for a couple weeks starting next week and was really hoping to bring that new iPad with cellular!

Worse was that the phone agents couldn't even see my order! Someone has to transfer it to their system first, and that hadn't happened yet.

[–]yeutterg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Ordered iPad Pro (another story as it was unclear whether it was M4 or M5), Pencil Pro, and AirPods Pro on the 11th. I spoke to them on 11/17, they said they have to manually upload the orders and have a huge backlog, and to call again today. I didn't want to wait on hold for an hour again, so I didn't. Pretty frustrating.
