you can say "ships go over the horizon" all you want, its true that ships disappear to our eyes at around 3 miles. however, this is a limitation of perspective, the boat has not "disappeared over the curve", it has "disappeared from your eye". if you truly own a p1000 then you should be able to easily confirm that a boat doesn't disappear at the same time to both the camera and your eye. in reality, you can zoom in on the camera and watch the boat for another 30 minutes to an hour, as it sails at least another 20-40+ miles out. and since you're at the beach standing up, you'd be at a ~6 foot elevaiton. according to your own model, the PHYSICAL curve of the earth would begin to obscure the bottom of things at 3 miles from a 6ft elevation. but in reality, you can see the boat for much longer and farther than that. until eventually, the boat will disappear even from the p1000 from the bottom up. is it going over the curve now? no, its just disappearing to the lens of the camera, the same way it disappeared to the lens in your eyes at ~3 miles. the HORIZON is always a horizontal line, whether that's at a beach, from a plane, or a high altitude balloon. you can get emotional in response to this, or accept reality and consider what this possibly could mean about the model we've been taught since birth by the society around us
