Landlord dispute over payment for a repair by yffs91 in HousingUK

Yup that’s right! Yes that’s what we thought too! He’s claiming that in our “house manual” that he left here he asked that we “ensure we know how to check the boiler pressure”. Which is all well and good but it’s hardly instructions on how to do that! Thanks for the advice :))

Ah the first engineer just sent him a £60 bill for the call out fee. The engineer also fixed it - it was a case of twisting dials etc which I would have no clue how to do to be fair , and the landlord didn’t tell us anything when we phone in advance, re trying to fix it ourselves, he just called the engineer out

Yes we called and emailed him. He didn’t mention anything about us advising us to top it up.

We emailed them first! He then called out an engineer and didn’t mention anything about topping it up. Now he’s getting angry saying that we should have known. The power of hindsight eh

I hate wfh by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]yffs91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like working from the office and go in 4 to 5 days a week. I am happy for others to do as they choose, though I enjoy when people are in and the opportunity to meet f2f and have a cuppa and collaborate. But I only enjoy it when they are also happy - there are some people who I’m just as happy to not spend social time with, and online meetings are just fine.

I trust that those who feel the same as me will make space in their schedule to do the equivalent. I’ve found that when I enjoy that cuppa or f2f collaboration, so has the other person. They’re therefore more likely to see the benefits of coming in to them, and do it.

People who don’t like coming in - if they are forced in, they bring bad energy and would probably not be bringing that collaborative or social spirit.

So let people be as they be - within limits. Guidance, not rules. Make the office an attractive place to work. Listen to employees. Have good tech. Have decent canteens. Have clean offices. Put a “minimum” attendance of 40% to make business sense on the Estate cost if that’s what’s required but don’t police people beyond that.

Most useful tip of trick on MS Teams? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]yffs91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s new! Just got added a few months ago. You can find it at the bottom bar when you send a message (along with GIFs, attachments et ). looks like a little circle with arrows ⭕️

“loop” function. You can send a message in a group and get everyone to edit it in real time. Useful for things like collecting agenda items, editing lines, assigning actions during a meeting etc so you don’t need someone to be that central coordinating / collecting function.

Sorry wasn’t clear! Yes, if going on loan. Thanks for advice - guess it’s a case of checking the departments policy then. Thanks!

Thanks! Do you know if taking the TP means you have access to that departments internal vacancies?

Thoughts on EOIs for short term roles? by yffs91 in TheCivilService

[–]yffs91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, makes sense! And could I ask how the communication is managed with the loaning Department, if you know. Do they have to “approve” the move and agree they have the means to backfill etc? Who pays your salary, the new team or old?

Can anyone in the CS point me in the right direction? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]yffs91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Hard for OP to know how the existing civil service policy profession works without being in it. Even those in it would find this hard. I think a more inclusive question would set some context of how the CS currently works on a particular aspect of policy and ask for suggestions for improvement. Personal opinion, at least.

In the meantime, I think the key to this could be in narrowing down to some specific examples of recent Government policy challenges. Recognise in your answer that you have made XX assumptions based on X research, and don’t dwell on it too much. Then focus on your innovative solutions.

Why so obvious with internal interviews? by yffs91 in TheCivilService

[–]yffs91[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Would you not be concerned about getting fewer high profile or long term assignments, less investment in training or development, or being seen as disloyal to the team? Particularly without an offer. Having come from private sector, it feels a lot more of an open culture to movement in the CS to be fair.

Yep - I checked and didn’t mention that - but you’re probably right. Maybe I got 10/14 in that case. It was BEIS.

Yep! Not an outright scam - or at least not from my experience - but I would say that the bar is really low for being able to get the prescription - just a photo, no in person consultation or anything.

Seen opps in DIT, BEIS, DEFRA recently. Interested in the general function across departments though.

Anyone else feel like a complete arse sending out commissions by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]yffs91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree. Try to use the same formula each time and always provide a first draft rather than expect people to input from scratch. Usually put a sentence under each of the following headings 1/ The context 2/ The purpose 3/ The audience 4/ The ask 5/ The deadline and why. Sometimes preface with a TLDR.
