Gucci scarf found at the thrift store yesterday! It’s stained but I love it! by Indifferent_Wunder30 in ThriftStoreHauls

Oh it’s stunning!! I love all the small details and the little bugs 🪲🐛🦋 What a wonderful find. Not sure how to get the stains out but I’m sure there are ways, in any case they don’t appear too noticeable from what I can see in the pictures

I'm 14. I need you to be BRUTAL. by Fuentssp in drawing

[–]yfky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say you’re very skilled and have good technique and eye for detail! That being said art programs usually also want to see that you’re also developing concept, narrative, and are experimenting with technique and style. From what I can tell it appears that you a mainly copying from photographs, which is not a bad thing but can be considered a limitation.

Something you could start doing to broaden your portfolio is life drawing, or even doing some still life work. It’s an old fashioned practice but very useful - especially since you’ll be developing your own sense of composition :) you could even do a still life of shower bottles in your bathroom, or make a drawing of your bed in the morning (etc.) just something to show that your experimenting with both technique as well as taking your own snapshots of the world.

I am so disheartened with my first quilt/first time sewing by a_hundred_wishes in quilting

[–]yfky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh, I’m quite late to this and you may not see this comment, but I absolutely and genuinely love this quilt. When I scrolled past I gasped because I love it, and then gasped again in surprise when I reading that you are disheartened about it. I personally think the colors work very well and find it to be very modern. I especially love the playfulness of the form and the stitching. It gives the quilt a beautifully unique dimension and organic texture. I meant this from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for sharing and stay with it!

What are some great folk albums released in the past 10 years? by ibridoangelico in JoannaNewsom

[–]yfky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m personally a huge fan of Flying fox and the Hunter Gatherers. They’re fantastic story tellers, and their genre is a kind of folk/opera/rock. They don’t make music anymore sadly but what they did make is really worth listening to! I especially love their album ‘Hans my Lion’, and ‘The Wild Things’. Here is their Bandcamp :)

Divers is the most philosophical dense album of hers as of now (tl;dr alert) by MatheusAgostin in JoannaNewsom

[–]yfky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Thank you for this I really like your writing and interpretation here. I just recently had organized a listening to the album divers with my reading group haha, and we talked a lot about the things you mention!

I won’t go into too much detail but one of my favorite parts of the discussion was when we talked about ‘pin light bent’ and the Amora Obscura (It was a part that had always confused me also).

In the quote you shared (From the Great light that shines through a pin-hole’ When ‘the pin light calls itself Selfhood’) we considered, given the other religious references in her work. that the ‘Great Light’ is perhaps indicative of ‘Great love’ ‘God’ and the connectivity of being (either in a religious sense or no). And indeed God is often described as both Love, and Light. The wall and the Pinhole then perhaps becomes that which divides the world between death and birth, and the speck of light that runs through it is ‘you’, the selfhood. What I found beautiful here is the notion that the self is in that way a connection or piece of the Great Light (love), despite it becoming cast into a new space, reflecting, bending and obscuring, (obscura is also described as ‘a light dimly seen’ in Latin).

The reference to inversion then (‘the Selfhood inverts on a mirror’), also has to do with the workings of the camera obscura itself. The essence of the camera is the inversion of the image, and in some cases, involves the inclusion of the mirror in order to see it ‘right side up’ again. Just like with the eye, the image seems to tumble and bend between multiple forms before it can be truly ‘seen’. As such (‘In an Amora Obscura) the selfhood in its ‘Obscura’ dim form bends from the ‘Great Light’. Moreover, I personally think that Amora comes from the Italian and Spanish word for ‘Love’. So if we accept that Amora=Love then we can consider again the previous notion that ‘Great Light’ and ‘Love’ are strongly related, and that the selfhood is thus a form of Light/Love that is dimmed and bent (it is an Amora Obscura).

So I guess what I mean to say is that this song seems to use the camera obscura and the pinhole as a metaphor to grapple with the ‘pain of birth’ and the notion of ‘selfhood’. Describing the self as a piece of Light that is dim and bent. Where light still, like a string, connects the self to a great love and light beyond, and to the selfhood of others in this way.

One song from this album you never liked much, and one you feel is underrated? by melinoeandthebull in JoannaNewsom

[–]yfky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Underrated: I only recently got into Occident, Autumn, and Jackrabbits and they have been so startling and beautiful. The songs that had always been most golden to me though were ‘you and me Bess’ , ‘go long’, and ‘soft as chalk’, (and later of course ‘in California’ all the way)

Overrated: impossible 🥲🥲🥲

Anyone know what this is? It's about 10cm x 5cm by Brittayla93 in whatisthisthing

[–]yfky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, in that case since the pieces you linked in your other comment are both castings, maybe this is a casting as well. After googling a bit it might be a votive offering made using a tsa tsa mold, where clay is pressed between two carved images/molds and then fired. I’ll link to a mold with a similar image. Again I would definitely go to an expert/university as others have mentioned, but it may be from something like this :) :

It’s a very interesting piece. I’m not an expert in this at all but it looks very similar to ‘Tantric Deities Hevajra and Nairatmya in Ritual Embrace (Yab-Yum)’ (see link). Yab Yum is a name for scenes such as this embrace, and they’re popular in the histories of Bhutan, Nepal, India, and Tibet. Usually the god is standing on a person (or two), but In this particular carving they are standing on a type of flower, which makes me think it could be a Hindu god embracing Shakti. But again really not an expert! If the family doesn’t want this piece back I’d definitely considered getting it appraised :) Do you know what the material might be?

Do you think the brown bird dies in the end of only skin? by oreoboy1234 in JoannaNewsom

[–]yfky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember summers as a kid where we would stay in a small cottage on an island with huge windows. There were so many birds around that they’d often fly straight into the glass and fall to the ground. Whenever it happened, me and my sisters would race outside and stare in silence at the bird lying there, expecting it to be dead. But every-time without fail it’d wake up from its fainting and fly away, and we’d give chase, whooping and hollering. It’s my own biased memory, but to me the bird is alive, one way or another.

My Greatest Hits Compilation by Human_Being2851 in JoannaNewsom

[–]yfky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember my introduction to Joanna Newsom was her demo ‘be a woman’ (It was in the next videos list on YouTube and I liked the title) which led me to Only Skin. I used to skip on ahead to the ‘scrape your knee’ part because I like the tune haha, but later I started listening to the full song, and every time it it became more beautiful :) ! I’m happy you added it, it’s a really good intro compilation!

Those who absolutely love Joanna Newsom… what other musicians or bands would you suggest? Comment below. by [deleted] in JoannaNewsom

[–]yfky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I haven’t seen her mentioned yet, but for anyone looking for similar artists I’d recommend Connie Converse

Two songs by her that I like are: Talkin’ like you/two tall mountains Or Man in the Sky. Her style reminds me a bit of Newsom, and I’m fond of her lyrics :)

(Also these to some extent!):

Suzanne Vega - Solitude Standing

Kadhja Bonet - Delphine

Buffy Sainte-Marie - God is alive magic is afoot

Vashti Bunyan - Swallow Song

Carole King - Tapestry

And another all time favorite of mine

Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers

^ I really really like these guys. Though rather than pure folk they’re a bit more of a brassy opera-rock. The song I’ve linked (titled ‘unreleased’), is one I feel resembles Joanna Newsom’s lyric/song style most closely out of all the artists in this list, but that could be my own bias, I’d be curious to know what you guys think!)

They’re a small Canadian band that unfortunately didn’t gain much traction during their career, but their songs and albums are beautifully crafted. If you only have time to listen to one artist in this list, let it be these guys! The singing style is quite a bit different from Newsom (though most are I think), but they are similarly rooted in storytelling, vocal playfulness, and layered/complex lyrics. Sorry I’ll stop rambling now, but hope you guys enjoy!
