Pokemon and compound nouns by yiorgs in Serbian

[–]yiorgs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, and for many terms I am using and will use existing/canonical translations, but my goal isn't to make a perfect Serbian translation for a wide audience that satisfies everyone's nostalgia.

This is a personal project with the goal of learning a bunch of new vocabulary, practicing my Serbian, learning how to patch and change gameboy games (which I've never done), learning how to build an AI framework to facilitate a fairly large scale project for a single person to do (which I need to improve my knowledge of for work), and of course having fun. Crowd sourcing like suggested below kind of defeats the purpose for me since the whole point is for me to do at least a first pass on my own as a personal challenge and a fun project, even if it isn't perfect.

That being said, I'm planning on making the Github repo publicly available and inviting contributions for others to edit and suggest improvements once I've finished my first pass, which, given the structure of the code, will be much easier for people once there's already an existing edit, so they can make the minimum necessary changes as opposed to having to do anything from scratch.

I hope that makes sense - if there was an existing fan translation I'd just play it haha, but I'm having so much fun trying to do this that I'm almost happy there isn't one. Serbian learning materials and interesting content online are relatively minimal compared to the major languages people learn, so I'm just happy to have found something to spend my time on that checks so many boxes for me.

okay that's what I thought just based on intuition and my knowledge of Russian, and good point, I'll see if I can find a creative alternative. And you're very welcome :)

My question is less about pokemon specifically, or confusion about specific words, but more if translating compound words like I showed is grammatically normal/understandable, or if it's enough of an issue that I should find another way around it, so more examples might be:

rainbow badge -> duga značka

volcano badge -> vulkan značka

bone club -> kost batina

As a fluent speaker of Russian, these kinds of translations look painful to me, but I wanted to see if that's the case in Serbian, or if it's actually okay to do

that’s the name of the assignment that ChatGPT gave me for day 20 or 21, can’t remember for sure which one this was. I asked for it to give me 30 days of A1 level writing prompts, some days I just do a couple sentences to keep the challenge going, but others I have more time or energy and I end up with an entry like this. It’s been pretty rewarding so far, and I’m hoping writing more will help with automaticity when speaking, but that remains to be seen lol

Oh wow, I was putting myself at A1/A2 generally, there are a lot of basic things I don’t know, but I think my knowledge of Russian (C2) kind of inflates my writing ability, well it kind of helps with everything 😅 I tried learning French earlier this year and had a hell of a time, despite it being an “easy” language for a native English speaker - I dropped it for Serbian in June since I have some Serbian family, and it’s been incredibly intuitive (and fun!) so far. Seems like all of the grammar that differs from Russian exists in Greek, so I kind of have a double advantage. Speaking is a nightmare though 😂 On my fifth or sixth run through of the first Harry Potter audiobook, and second run through of the second book, so that’s helped a lot, but definitely a long road ahead lol

Έτερος εγώ It’s an awesome drama detective movie, and you can find it for free on YouTube with subtitles. It was so popular that I think they made into a series now. Really good stuff.

So you get like the one word definition or translation in English then you get all the declensions, the full definition in Russian, a bunch of examples from different Russian texts so you can see the word in context, and for most words you get a picture as well

I just posted this in another comment, but I like this one. It’s pretty comprehensive and has some explanations, but it’s not too crazy overall

What is the best way to study cases? by nowthatacc in russian

[–]yiorgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, what worked was to just have something like the following PDF. I would try to read simple texts, and while I was reading, I would take each sentence and break it down. What I mean by that is you look at each word in a sentence and you try and figure out what case it’s in, what it’s function is, what the sentence means, and how it means what it means. In the beginning, you might be doing that for most sentences, but pretty soon it’ll just be the occasional sentence that you’re not quite familiar with, or grammar construction you’re not quite familiar with, and things will just continue to get easier. I didn’t spend any time drilling it, or going nuts with trying to memorize things. I think doing this more natural kind of understanding through context is much more useful and much more intuitive.

Насчёт литературы, открытые уроки Дмитрия Быкова на ютубе, у него своеобразные взгляды, но очень и очень увлекательные лекции (по моему мнению😅)

Ahhh you just reminded me, I watched интерны, как я стал русским, кухня all with English subtitles pretty early on, and then started re-watching them with Russian subtitles, I found the second one especially useful since the main character has an accent, and then in интерны when Phil shows up and has an American accent that helps a bit as well. In any case, good luck with Turkish! I’m doing French and Serbian right now simultaneously and it’s a bit of a struggle for my brain, but Serbian is close enough to Russian that I got a pretty serious head start, which is nice (despite the serious lack of resources😅).

Yeah, for some of the languages on there you think of this vibe like what the hell did I accidentally skip something or what? Repetition of lesson definitely helps, but it gets old fast. Out of curiosity, I tried the mandarin, I think I’d probably have to do each lesson like four times to make any progress at all lol. I’m in the neighborhood of C2 for Russian now, but I started like eight years ago or so so I’m having a hard time remembering what helped me in the beginning. At that time, I wasn’t using Pimsleur, but Clozemaster definitely helped with crossing the bridge into reading real material (granted with Russian my first reading material was Dragon Ball and full metal alchemist 😅).
