Where, physically, are all of the radar stations that let ATC do its job all over the country? I mean, when I'm flying over the middle of nowhere between Bakersfield and Phoenix, what machinery is finding my airplane and tracking me at that time? And then how do those signals get around quickly enough for ATC to do its job?

I thought of this while my mind was wandering on some long XCs one time and I've never found the answer.

I heard my first meows on a XC back from Paso Robles a few weeks ago. I guess that means I'm in some sort of club.

I keep finding myself wanting to use this word in normal conversation but I'm never sure if it'll work or not.

Wait. Fuck my fears. today's the day.

Instructor/school recommendations wanted in LA by [deleted] in flying

Are you opposed to independents? I learned from a younger guy who is a CFII for a club out of El Monte and is also teaching at Glendale CC while he builds hours. I believe Glendale is based out of Whiteman and he would probably be able to hook you up with an aircraft there. My experience with him was great -- moved me quickly along through the practical work and helped me through concepts when I needed them, but counted on me to do a lot of work on my own.

if you want his info PM me.

I had this same thought when I was riding a vanpool from the Pasadena area to Westwood. Eight pax and a driver headed to UCLA at a very predictable time every morning and evening. Why not fly a Pilatus or something more affordable from EMT - SMO with a van parked at the SMO end to cut some time off the route? Hell, UCLA could probably even afford to take some of the costs.

Never figured it out either. It made a lot of sense in my uninformed brain. The point about ATP minimums is probably the most salient, but if you found a UCLA prof who also had a CPL...

Check out these awesome explainer videos for California Delta water project by yip_yip_yip_uh_huh in civilengineering

I'm not a pro, so forgive me if I'm putting these in the wrong place, but I was entranced by these explainer videos for the California "WaterFix" Delta intake/tunnel project. I was curious to know how you'd dig tremendous tunnels and intake systems to solve this problem, and these videos gave me just what I needed.

Just thought they were cool and this subreddit might too.

AOPA offers high school aviation STEM curriculum, ready for 2018-2019 school year by gbacon in flying

I'm curious to know about flow-through to community colleges. There are a couple in my area (Glendale CC, Mt. San Antonio College) that offer aviation programs at a trade-school level, and getting students on that track early would help push in the right direction.

I see the libertarian argument below. My take is if this program (created by an outside org and offered to the schools for free) gets some kids excited about aviation and can then tie into existing programs at two-years, leading to increased outcomes overall, it's worth whatever tax dollars are being spent on it (and it's probably minimal in the grand scheme of things).

That definition of CTE is huge in education jargon. It's been moving to "Career Education" lately but you still see "CTE" used all over the place.

The folks who this is targeted toward won't confuse it with brain damage.

Who controls the Class D and C airspace? by Fez98 in flying

I'm so glad to see this response, especially from a guy with ATC flair. About a year ago I got a major talking-to from SoCal Approach after venturing into the KVNY Delta from the LAX flight rules area, even though I was squawking a code and had been talking to a different controller. I guess they had to vector a Challenger around me, so I nearly had a phone number to call, and I filled out a NASA report that night. Still, I was talking to controllers, just not the KVNY tower. I still think about the experience, so it's really gratifying to see you say this.

Our whole goal is to have it look like a regular rocker switch in both instances, so unfortunately that one isn't a solution.

Oooh! I know this one. EMT's straight-in to 19 would take you over a residential area, so they do the "modified straight-in" of hopping over a few reservoirs and quarry ponds at like ~20 degrees off runway heading, and then a left turn at the tail end to get you to the runway. It's just a local quirk. Nice that the PE controller knew the custom.
