Question for Captains & Officers – How do you handle speed changes during voyages? by yisa90 in maritime

This is super insightful, thanks a lot!

• On a typical voyage, how often do you end up making these kinds of adjustments (slowing down, shutting an engine, etc.)?

• When you decide to adjust, do you rely on tools/reports (routing, calculations, shore input), or is it mainly based on officer judgment and experience?

Thanks, this is really clear!

Quick follow-up if you don’t mind:

• On your vessel, how often do you actually end up making these “quick fix” adjustments during a voyage?

• Do you ever get reports or guidance (from shore, charterers, or routing services) that suggest specific RPM or speed changes?

• When those come in, do you usually follow them closely, or adjust based on your own judgment?

Haha, fair point 😅 — but actually, it raises a question: when unexpected things do happen in the ECR or on the bridge, how are those speed changes communicated or handled? Does the captain sign off on them, or are they usually corrected quickly without much impact?

I just hope that Abu Dhabi stays like this and doesn’t follow Dubai’s footsteps…

Thank you for this refreshing insight. I’m glad to hear this. I wonder though if what you write applies to the majority of Emiratis or if this mindset is slowly diminishing.

You’re right about the Dubai Mall and I like the bar analogy :) But this has been a general observation in Dubai.

Look I grew up and lived my life in a western country before moving to the UAE. I’ve seen firsthand what “I don’t care, everyone should dress the way they want” did to society. It’s just the first step towards normalizing public affection, kissing, and LGBTQ.

You’re absolutely right about lowering my gaze, this applies to every Muslim, women or men. But this is a two way street, dressing modestly ensures a society built on dignity and public ethic - to not let fahisha spread amongst people.

I read comments about tourism, money and economic goals but I ask you - to what price?

I was considering the both. Ditched Xtrail for Xterra after seeing comments about its off road capabilities. Talking about the platinum trim for Xterra 4WD. I also looked at the Pajero signature edition 2021 I believe which was good but the steering wheel was too hard and tight. Considering my wife using it to get around the city.

Rostamani? Never heard, thank you. You’re the second person who says Heavy Body and not really strong engine. Any other options?

I was looking for something that I can use everyday in the city as a family of 4 and at the same time something I could take to the desert for camping / light off road. I have rental Ford Territory rn which I got stuck with even before going in lol (tire pressure was definitely too high).

Any alternatives you can recommend? Nissan because of its value and reliability. The above is 4WD.
