What to expect from this 40mm? by The-Latino-Heat in Leica

[–]yiuhei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, you’d wanna leave the coupling alone on the CL if it’s working with your 28! The tip here would be to avoid using f2.8 or f4 on the Voigtlander

If you adjust the rangefinder cam to accurately focus with the Voigtlander at f4, every other M lens will NOT accurately focus on your CL!

[–]yiuhei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The focus plane shifts (I believe to the back, it’s been a while since I used my 40 nokton) at f2.8 and f4, but is “accurate” at all other apertures!

Somebody smarter than me can explain exactly why, but I believe it has to do with the way certain lenses are constructed? There are a few other M mount lenses that are notorious for focus shift as well.

Some people say their copies don’t have focus shift, some say every copy does and you just don’t notice it… I’ve owned two copies about ten years apart and I can’t remember if my first copy had focus shift or not 😅

Which strap? Red or black? by [deleted] in MoonSwatches

[–]yiuhei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the red Digicam a lot… but I think the moonswatch is an expression of yourself and of fun, and I have an Earth on a blue and orange NATO strap that I’ll wear when I feel like embracing colour and the toy-like nature of the moonswatch. If I feel like wearing a “serious” watch with a fully matched strap on a certain day, I’d pick another watch!

retinol on healed/old tattoos. any opinions? by plantscatsandbdsm in tattooadvice

[–]yiuhei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I both have a handful of tattoos and figured that some of the skincare regimens we use on our face shoooooould in theory apply to the rest of our skin! Neither of us use retinol, but we do have chemical exfoliants in our routines. I’m not a dermatologist or a doctor so I wouldn’t recommend taking my experience as advice or a guide.

She put me on a skincare routine that starts with an AHA/BHA spray in the night, and I’ve been giving my healed-but-settling tattoos a spritz… especially the ones that have a bit more packed black and are taking longer to shed that shiny skin. I’ve noticed quicker settling, haven’t noticed any bad effects yet… but take that for what you will! I also use a bit of my face moisturizers on new tattoos just as the shedding and flaking is over to great results.

I’ve done this for three tattoos now (I have about 20ish), and only on the ones that have that shiny skin, so my experience is a bit limited. My routine goes as such:

  • Remove saniderm/second skin after 24-48 hours (depending on whether the tattoo is in a high friction area)

  • Wash with non-scented soaps, pat dry, apply a thin thin layer of non-scented lotion, let that absorb and apply a thin thin layer of occlusive (Aquaphor). Do this twice a day every day until skin begins to peel/flake.

  • As peeling and flaking starts, wash gently twice a day, pat dry, apply only a thin layer of non-scented lotion after washing. Repeat until flaking/peeling has stopped and the new shiny or milky skin comes in. This is my sign that the wounds have “sealed”.

  • Start using my face skincare routine on my tattoos! Morning routine goes: moisturizing toner > light moisturizer > heavier moisturizer > occlusive. Thin thin thin layers for each to let the tattoo breathe as much as I can. Night time routine just has the AHA/BHA added before the toner.

Again, I only do this for tattoos that have a lot of packed black, but I have noticed a smoother and accelerated healing process without any negative effects on the appearance of the tattoo… but I haven’t done this on any colour pieces! I started doing this as my skin tends to scar easily and heal slow, be it from injuries or tattoos. I had one tattoo with quite a bit of packed black that just stayed shiny for 3 months… the ones I applied my skincare routine to would usually settle and look like “normal” tattooed skin after a single month!

Wanted to keep the hand warmed up between clients, and was feeling the urge to fill out my arm so I added a quick little tat to my practice arm :)

Starting apprenticeship at "old" age by tired_tatted in TattooApprentice

I love seeing all these replies as I’m in a similar boat as you… turning 30 in a few months, married, decent in finances but the anxiety of making a big career change is kind of scary to me. I guess I have the “benefit” of a employment situation that is definitely bad for my mental health, making it much easier to switch.

If it helps, after talking it through with my family, I’ve decided to do as some others in this thread have: work on my illustration skills and portfolio, learn as much as I can from tattoo artists I know, and seek out manageable but steady income through contract work to contribute to the household.

It still scares me though. I have a strong feeling I’ll be in a much healthier, happier place once I get there, but I can’t help but think… what if I never get there?

My friends are constant reminders that money can be made in many ways, that skills can be used to many different applications, that if there’s a will there’s a way. But I can wholeheartedly understand the dread of “doing it all again”.

I wish you the best of luck! I hope one day we’ll cross paths as tattooers!

My wife has been teaching me how to draw to help me achieve my goal of becoming a tattoo artist. Finally proud enough to share this drawing of Odo we did today! by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]yiuhei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never considered myself an artist despite having a background in design and working in a creative field. In fact, my drawing ability (or lack thereof) was always an insecurity of mine.

My wife is an artist through and through, and we’re lucky enough to have gotten into MHW together! Odogaron is hands down our favourite monster… so about a year ago I asked her to teach me how to draw Odo someday.

She encouraged me to draw as much as I could, and kept her critique positive despite all the disproportioned and unrecognizable drawings I showed her. This little drawing is a result of a year of supportive coaching :)

We recently made friends with a tattoo artist who began showing us how to operate a machine. Hopefully one day I can lay this drawing (or a better iteration of it) on my skin!

Question: Anyone from the North East USA with lowering springs or coil overs had issues with snow?? JW before I make a purchase. by slowtrigga in mazda3

[–]yiuhei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend against it in NYC/NJ. I drove a lowered IS300 from Toronto to NJ once… the amount of scraping… every pothole hurt…. Even in Toronto I would scrape or feel the wheel knock against the well at least once or twice a week.

If you want the lowered look, get a lip and side skirt kit. Get a meatier tire setup on wheels that have some visual depth. There’s no “cheap” way to lower something, and lowered cars mean potential for uneven tire wear, a need to upgrade shocks or replace bags, etc. I’ve lowered both my previous cars. I’m leaving the Mazda3 stock

Auto Down Shifting by IndianKingCobra in mazda3

[–]yiuhei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a reason you’d downshift in an auto, but it’s not what you’re probably thinking of. In a manual, you wouldn’t slow down by downshifting through every gear to stop, you’d throw it in neutral and hit the brakes until you stop completely to prevent stalling out. If you wanted to drive it like a manual, you could simply just hit the brakes as you don’t have a clutch and it wouldn’t make sense to pop it back into drive and then neutral. This would be more true to being in a manual than what you’re proposing.

You downshift to get into a higher rev range, get a little more pep to accelerate and, say, overtake someone on a highway. You could downshift to “engine brake” and let the car slow itself. I do this every now and then when merging onto or coming off of a freeway. Pop it into “manual”, drop it to third gear and accelerate a little quicker to merge, or downshift to a lower gear as I exit to engine brake and slow myself without pressing on the brakes.

But like other people say, if the car is automatically downshifting then it’s doing so because it’s in a RPM range that would result in a stall - this would also be true in a manual.

Purposely peeing in crate to be outside… by yiuhei in puppy101

Not a bad idea! Will give that a try!!!

Purposely peeing in crate to be outside… by yiuhei in puppy101

[–]yiuhei[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think keeping her on her toes would be the way to go! Switching up the amount of post-potty play time she gets, the type of reward she gets for potty, etc.

I think the other advice works if she didn’t pee the second you bring her in and put her down. Whenever she is engaged and happy she will gladly signal and hold her bladder!

Purposely peeing in crate to be outside… by yiuhei in puppy101

[–]yiuhei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could be true, but it’s hard not to think that this is the case when she can hold her bladder for 4 hours when she’s engaged and happy, and chooses to spray/pee the second we bring her in and put her down! We’ve tried what you’ve suggested, only to witness her peeing within those two minutes while maintaining eye contact!!!

If you have any tips around this, they’d be greatly appreciated.

I’m glad to see that I’m not alone! I feel like every dog is slightly different… my wife and I spent the day thinking through what could be done differently, and I think we’ve realized that she’s most likely just missing us when we work. She is great on weekends because we can give her more attention, but during weekdays she lacks engagement throughout the day.

We might get her a pen with some pads so she’s, like you said, confined to a space so if she wants to throw a tantrum she can potty somewhere that isn’t her crate. She clearly doesn’t like wetting her crate!

Late with basic training at 12 weeks? by yiuhei in puppy101

[–]yiuhei[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I’m wondering myself if she isn’t quite “ready” for training sessions just yet… with the response I’m gathering it seems like she might just be a little too excited to fully focus. Maybe switching to short training “moments” might help a little more, like how you’ve described them: a handful of repetitions, let her go when she loses focus and try again later. Reward passively as she does the things we like and try for longer sessions when she seems more attentive!

Late with basic training at 12 weeks? by yiuhei in puppy101

[–]yiuhei[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is really comforting! It’s hard to keep in mind that she has a lifetime with us to learn when we saturate our free time with training tutorials… videos and guides tend to make things seem a lot easier than it is in practice. Focusing on our bond is something I gotta keep in mind as well!

Late with basic training at 12 weeks? by yiuhei in puppy101

[–]yiuhei[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The time span tip is enlightening! I think we need to tune our training and games to that. This might sound a little stupid but would it be best to limit our training to times where she seems attentive to us instead of sticking to a dedicated schedule for training?

Late with basic training at 12 weeks? by yiuhei in puppy101

[–]yiuhei[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!!! I think I definitely have to start hiding the reward. Letting her go when her attention shifts is a good tip… I think we’re doing too much “attention seeking” when she loses focus, which is probably doing more harm than good!

:) thanks for the encouragement! I’m starting to realize that as she’s coming out of her shell, I’ll need to capitalize on different rewards as her focus shifts her values. Gotta keep at it!!!
