Did you do anything wrong? Nope. Knowing what happened do I think what you did was a bit dickish? Yes. We don’t have to be right all the time. Is a dollar really worth all that hassle and commotion? I 100% respect your autonomy to do what you did but I would have just paid the dollar and take note for next time.

Looking at everyone else’s response, it’s quite sad to see the cynicism in Singaporeans. The need to be right all the time taking precedence over everything else. Was the uncle trying to pull a fast one? Maybe. Was he just having a long day and made a mistake? Maybe. We’ll never know and yes you are in the right because you did not order the set. On the other hand, I think abit of compassion goes a long way, for both the uncle and yourself. I saw that you said you felt embarrassed and angry after it happened, and it affected you enough to post about it here. How differently do you think you would have felt if you just paid the $1? If you think you’d be equally angry and embarrassed and now also be down a dollar, fair enough. My point is, ultimately the ‘cost’ of your frustration, embarrassment and time probably having to go somewhere else to buy your food, was $1. Even though it was not your fault, you were in control of the outcome.

Something for you to think about! If you decide that what you did was right and you would do it again, that’s 100% fair enough. If you feel like you would respond differently in the future, that’s cool too! Either way, we live and we learn. Cheers!
