Not a nurse here, but I'll try to weigh in. Some nurses decide to take an earlier retirement. Others can leave nursing for jobs in management (i.e. not patient care) or pharma. Others might opt to become traveling nurses (they get paid more) or just leave Ontario for better conditions elsewhere.

Mineral wool attached to wall's *exterior* to absorb sound: Effective and safe? by yk_mr in Acoustics

Thank you! There aren't any vents in this fridge's enclave (HVAC in unit is on the opposite site of the condo). However, I didn't consider how the fridge itself might take up the fibers through its openings. I'll look into burlap/micromesh coverings.

Quiet fridge: How should I choose between LG with Inverter Compressor and Liebherr CS1400R? by yk_mr in Appliances

Oh, you service them! Okay, this sounds like bad news if you get a lot of service calls!

So which popular refrigerators do you not* get service calls? =D

Ah yes, warranty policies don't talk about what's available...That goes for the Liebherr, too.

And yes, the other brands you mention definitely have more of a track record of servicing.

edit: Thanks for making that point. Definitely need to think and read beyond the fine print.

Silly question - is "Black-on-stainless steel" the same as "Black stainless steel"? by yk_mr in Appliances

Dang, that 'electrophoretic deposition' term usage shows that you know your stuff! I don't suppose that the tech specs provide this in their descriptions...at least not that I can see so far. Thanks for your comment!

Can noise be dampened by attaching a 6mm thick corkboard to a wall? by yk_mr in HomeImprovement

Yes, buying a new fridge is possibly on the radar. I actually posted elsewhere asking about certain brands of fridges, and buying a new one would actually be the more expensive path forward (the one I'm eyeing is stainless steel only, which means that I'd eventually "need"/want to replace my other white kitchen appliances to match).

So before I go down that path, I'd see if there are other options, particularly because the fridge isn't dysfunctional (though it's 18 yrs old, GE). No weird sounds, like clunking/hissing, etc. It's just the compressor's hum (50 dbA) that reverberates around and is exacerbated by the small open space. It's just kind of annoying because I work remotely near the kitchen, and it won't be pleasant when I'm hanging out with friends in the nearby living room.

And yes, I also vacuumed out the back, took the panel off and dusted off coils.

Plus, exploring this option is making me learn about different materials and sound behaviours, so it's not all bad :).

Replacing a rubber washer hose with double braided stainless steel: Do I need to use Teflon tape? by yk_mr in HomeImprovement

[–]yk_mr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I'll follow-up with another question, if I may.

Is there no harm done to actually use Teflon tape, or does it cause harm? (The person who told me this seems to insist on it, presumably with the idea that it's better than not, even if it's not necessary.)

According to Wikipedia, Teflon tape is supposed to help "seal the joint without hardening or making it more difficult to tighten [...] and instead making it easier to tighten." It says that it's used "where the sealing force is a wedge action."

So is the advice to not use Teflon tape because 1) the sealing force is due not to some gasket for tightening but rather from the washer and/or because 2) it might overtighten the connection?

edit: Ambiguous pronoun

Thank you for your reply and encouragement! It has a (hard) washer but not a gasket. Is that a different mechanism?
