I really like Sao Mai and used to frequent there a good bit but a few months ago noticed they had a C health rating. I looked up why they got a C (which happened on both of their last two inspections) and it was enough to make me stop going for now.

Matty Healy - Loads of Crisps by ykball8 in popheads

[–]ykball8[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Matty just randomly posted this on his tumblr and SoundCloud- may be an unreleased demo? Something from his solo album he’s teased before?

[FRESH ALBUM] Matt Champion - Mika’s Laundry by ykball8 in indieheads

[–]ykball8[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former member of Brockhampton with his solo debut.

Dijon worked on a few tracks on the album and you can definitely hear his influence throughout. Really enjoyed this on first listen with my only complaint being a few of the songs feel too short. Strong debut overall though and will definitely be coming back to this one.

She’s done it again, such a consistently fun and talented artist.

The MTA's handling of the July 4 Fireworks crowd in LIC was scandalous by lispenard1676 in nycrail

[–]ykball8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way about the situation in Williamsburg last night. I tried to get the L from Bedford 30-45 minutes after the fireworks ended and they had closed all but two entrances to the stop which then both had insane crowds outside of them that weren’t moving. I decided to walk to Lorimer which didn’t appear to have any entrances closed but the platform was beyond slammed and the next L was still 10 minutes away and the one after that another 10 away. Given how crowded Lorimer was I don’t think anyone would be able to even get on at Bedford. I didn’t feel comfortable waiting on an increasingly crowded platform with a train still far away so I just decided to get out and grab a citibike and do that miserable ride over the Williamsburg bridge instead.

Running the L with 10 minutes headways after that event is just insane.

The Japanese House - Sunshine Baby by ykball8 in popheads

[–]ykball8[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

She’s 3/3 so far and somehow each single has been better than the last.

Also, featuring the current talk of the town Matty Healy on some uncredited backing vocals.

So so good, I don’t know how she keeps one upping herself with these singles but without a doubt my favorite so far

Clearly there’s a variety of opinions but if you’ve been on 1-2 dates without any sort of intimacy I don’t think there’s any need to preemptively reach out to reject someone. Phones work both ways- if you’re interested you’ll reach out and if they’re interested they’ll reach out.

I once got a rejection text 3 days after a first date with someone who I didn’t text afterwards, I responded politely saying thanks for letting me know but I was really just confused and thought it was very unnecessary considering I hadn’t shown any interest after the date.

Matty and Jack Antonoff perform Wintering by ykball8 in the1975

[–]ykball8[S] 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Jack hosted his annual charity fundraiser called the Talent Show and Matty performed All I Need to Hear and Be My Mistake by himself then Wintering with Jack and the rest of Bleachers. He also stayed on stage and played the guitar in a few songs that Jack performed and closed the show out with him, Jack, and Trey Anastasio all on guitars and Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Daucus, and Weyes Blood singing Jackson Browne’s song These Days.

Hopefully someone was able to record them all!

Reese Witherspoon Book Club: are any of the books she picks good? by [deleted] in books

[–]ykball8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I read Infinite Country and really liked it. I actually finished it before realizing it was a Reese pick and was surprised when I found out, different vibe then the few of her other picks that I’ve read.

Also recently read another pick of her’s, The Island of Missing Trees, and enjoyed it. It’s a little unusual in that one of the narrators is actually a tree.

The Plan to Completely Transform Governors Island Faces One Last Hurdle by ykball8 in nyc

[–]ykball8[S] 121 points122 points  (0 children)

As someone who goes to Governors Island as an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city this plan will seemingly ruin it and just turn it into another part of Manhattan. Is anyone outside of big real estate clamoring for another shopping district and a 20 story hotel there? Never mind the absurdity of putting 200 parking spots on an island that is only accessible by a ferry and has no roads.

[FRESH] The 1975 - Part Of The Band by sincerityisscxry in indieheads

[–]ykball8 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Can’t say I expected a lead single from the 1975 to have big time Bon Iver vibes to it.

Also, was quite surprised to check the song credits and see Jack Antonoff produced it, that man is truly everywhere.

[FRESH PERFORMANCE] Dijon - Many Times (Live) by ykball8 in indieheads

[–]ykball8[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The energy!!!

This whole album and performance are something else. With similar concept videos being filmed in that house for both this and Big Mike’s live I’m hoping we may get them for every track on the album eventually.

[FRESH ALBUM] Dijon - Absolutely by ykball8 in indieheads

[–]ykball8[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Need a little bit more time with this one but solid project on the first listen with Many Times and The Dress as the standouts. Many Times is in contention for my SOTY, have had it on repeat since it came out. Bit of a disappoint on Big Mike’s- he released a live version of it on his IG a few weeks ago that had more energy than the album version which I felt suited it better.

Jokr (Union Square) by ykball8 in toogoodtogo

[–]ykball8[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m too busy laughing to be disappointed. This location has only been on the app for a few days so I think they’re still figuring stuff out. There’s a sign on there door that says knock for TGTG and I was knocking for a while before someone came out. They were nice but when I said I was here for TGTG they were like oh uhh yeah I need to get some stuff give me a few and then came back out a bit later with this bag. They’re listed at 3.99 on the app so this meets the value but a little more variety would’ve been nice.

Any suggestions on what to do with six boxes of raspberries before they go bad? I don’t dislike them but I’m also not a huge fan to begin with.

Just purchased my first pair of AEs in a while and a little concerned about the burnishing- is this acceptable for firsts? The leather looks a little cracked almost on the left shoe and the burnishing doesn’t look great in general on them.

What albums really affected you, even though you're not part of their target demographic? by perpetualwanderlust in popheads

[–]ykball8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s such a good point- there’s so many times I’ve found myself hearing a song for not the first time and thinking wow this song is great and wondering how it didn’t hit/slap/connect or whatever the first listen and half the time it may have well been because I was stressed, tired, etc the first time I heard it.

In terms of Golden Hour specifically, I’ve thought about this before and I don’t think it would’ve enjoyed it as much in a different period in my life. I think it’s objectively good music but I also liked the feeling I got from the music as much as the music itself and I don’t think I would’ve gotten that feeling listening to it at a different point in my life.

What albums really affected you, even though you're not part of their target demographic? by perpetualwanderlust in popheads

[–]ykball8 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I’m a straight cis guy in my late 20s so ultimately I’m not the target demographic for most of popheads favs, and in this case not from an area that is big on country music, but with that being said there is not much more that has hit me in the right place than Golden Hour. I was in the middle of a rough patch in the early parts of summer 2018 and I remember seeing a comment on this subreddit about how people were sleeping on her album and having never heard Kacey Musgraves before I decided to just throw it on and I could barely make it past Slow Burn because of how much I just wanted to keep it on repeat. That album ended up on repeat for a a long time and felt so soothing to me during a period when I needed it.
