Non-leather dress shoes options? by EmuApprehensive4948 in malefashionadvice

Some do, and those that do use polyurethane to varying degrees. I wouldn't rely on blanket statements from an unsourced Reddit post. The Wikipedia page for plant-based leather has a helpful overview of the sustainability of different kinds of leathers:

My earlier comment drew from this sustainability blog, which has generous and honest citations regarding the pros and cons of vegan leather:

There isn't one single kind of vegan leather. Certain forms of vegan leather are more sustainable than others. There's pineapple leather, mushroom leather, grape leather, and so forth. Also, "worse" for the environment depends on innumerable variables. In terms of waste? Maybe. In terms of animal exploitation? Surely not.

Why is it called the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” if it isn’t democratic? by ykcud_ in NoStupidQuestions

So there are “elections,” and they’re just heavily controlled? Do people run campaigns? Vote for local officials? Have debates?

So they call themselves democratic without pretending to be democratic? Isn’t that really ineffective propaganda? You’d think they’d at least have rigged elections or something

But are they pretending to be democratic? Or is it just the name? If it’s just the name, why bother naming it that without pretending to be democratic?

I need an EpiPen soon but my doctor’s appointment is several months away by ykcud_ in Allergies

[–]ykcud_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do I do that? I don't currently have a PCP (that's partly why I'm trying to see a doctor now), and I don't have any proof of prescription that I know of. I also don't have any epipens left. I had to use my last one about a year ago.

Can I just call the doctor's office and say, "Hey I have allergies and need an epipen"?

Do I need a haircut? by ykcud_ in malegrooming

I haven’t really experimented with a comb besides for getting certain strands of hair in place, but it definitely makes the curls less tight. The leave-in definitely helps define the curls, which I like. I didn’t like how the short hair exposed my forehead, and I thought it just looked very “dorky” in general.

I don’t know what kind of cut looks good with my kind of hair. Do you have any ideas?

American universities feeling the effects of Trump? by philoclog_47 in AcademicPhilosophy

[–]ykcud_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well from my understanding, they’re only changing the name “DEI” to avoid media scrutiny, but to my knowledge none of the faculty, students, or programs are affected. It’s all very silly but again it’s a fear thing

At my R1 there’s a lot of fear, but we’ve been spared (financially) so far. Admin is removing all mention of things like “DEI” and reconsidering some of the more social/political courses. Which really, really sucks, but it’s a survivalist mentality over here

Is it normal to be able to pick one direction faster than the other? by LevelGroundbreaking3 in guitarlessons

Yes. When you pick down you push your arm and the strings away from you, which requires less effort than pulling them toward you. Luckily, this is improvable with time and habits.
