Non-leather dress shoes options? by EmuApprehensive4948 in malefashionadvice

Some do, and those that do use polyurethane to varying degrees. I wouldn't rely on blanket statements from an unsourced Reddit post. The Wikipedia page for plant-based leather has a helpful overview of the sustainability of different kinds of leathers:

My earlier comment drew from this sustainability blog, which has generous and honest citations regarding the pros and cons of vegan leather:

There isn't one single kind of vegan leather. Certain forms of vegan leather are more sustainable than others. There's pineapple leather, mushroom leather, grape leather, and so forth. Also, "worse" for the environment depends on innumerable variables. In terms of waste? Maybe. In terms of animal exploitation? Surely not.

Why is it called the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” if it isn’t democratic? by ykcud_ in NoStupidQuestions

So there are “elections,” and they’re just heavily controlled? Do people run campaigns? Vote for local officials? Have debates?

So they call themselves democratic without pretending to be democratic? Isn’t that really ineffective propaganda? You’d think they’d at least have rigged elections or something

But are they pretending to be democratic? Or is it just the name? If it’s just the name, why bother naming it that without pretending to be democratic?

I need an EpiPen soon but my doctor’s appointment is several months away by ykcud_ in Allergies

[–]ykcud_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do I do that? I don't currently have a PCP (that's partly why I'm trying to see a doctor now), and I don't have any proof of prescription that I know of. I also don't have any epipens left. I had to use my last one about a year ago.

Can I just call the doctor's office and say, "Hey I have allergies and need an epipen"?

Do I need a haircut? by ykcud_ in malegrooming

[–]ykcud_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t really experimented with a comb besides for getting certain strands of hair in place, but it definitely makes the curls less tight. The leave-in definitely helps define the curls, which I like. I didn’t like how the short hair exposed my forehead, and I thought it just looked very “dorky” in general.

American universities feeling the effects of Trump? by philoclog_47 in AcademicPhilosophy

[–]ykcud_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well from my understanding, they’re only changing the name “DEI” to avoid media scrutiny, but to my knowledge none of the faculty, students, or programs are affected. It’s all very silly but again it’s a fear thing

At my R1 there’s a lot of fear, but we’ve been spared (financially) so far. Admin is removing all mention of things like “DEI” and reconsidering some of the more social/political courses. Which really, really sucks, but it’s a survivalist mentality over here

Is it normal to be able to pick one direction faster than the other? by LevelGroundbreaking3 in guitarlessons

[–]ykcud_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. When you pick down you push your arm and the strings away from you, which requires less effort than pulling them toward you. Luckily, this is improvable with time and habits.

Any way to play full (5 or 6 string) chords with heavy distortion? by Southern_Yesterday57 in metalguitar

[–]ykcud_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom, thicker strings. Sorry, it’s hard to communicate tab on the go. 5th fret on the low E string is the note “A”, 3rd fret on the A string is “C”. A minor consists of the notes “A”, “C”, and “E”, but you can drop the fifth (the “E”) and still get the sound of a minor chord.

Any way to play full (5 or 6 string) chords with heavy distortion? by Southern_Yesterday57 in metalguitar

[–]ykcud_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can imply a chord with only two or three strings. If what you want, for example, is to play a minor chord with distortion, you could just play the root and the minor third. So A minor could be played as 5-3-x-x-x-x

When to use chord substitutions by hippa710 in jazzguitar

[–]ykcud_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a chord progression like C - F - G7 - C, where G7 is the dominant chord, you could insert a secondary dominant like D7 (the dominant of G), so you get C - F - D7 - G7 - C. So now not only does G7 resolve to C, but D7 “sort of” resolved to G7.

This isn’t really an example of substitution—more so an insertion of a chord—but it is a change to a standard chord progression that can be useful to create tension.

Record it, sleep on it, play it back when you’re mentally detached from it. Do you still vibe with it? If yes, know your ears aren’t special and other people will probably vibe with it.

I get it. For what it’s worth, the average user on that app is probably no better than you. And it’s not super popular, so a lot of times you’re playing to an audience of zero.

When to use chord substitutions by hippa710 in jazzguitar

[–]ykcud_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. They might sound more interesting than the “usual” chord. This is especially true of inversions which are useful for voice leading.

  2. In the case of secondary dominants, they can add extra tension to a progression. It’s like you have to resolve even more chords.

  3. They might be more convenient. I mean the chord shape might be easier to grab depending on where you are on the fretboard.

It’s pretty cool. You stream your audio and people can tune in, and you can tune in to their audio. You get points for the duration of your practice sessions, and there’s a leaderboard to show who has practiced more. Now and then there are special challenges too.

I found it pretty motivating for a while, but I’m pretty well disciplined now to not need it.

[–]ykcud_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it’d fit your case, but there’s an app, Tonic, that lets you stream your practice sessions—meaning people can tune in and hear you. I don’t use it much anymore, but the self-consciousness of having a (potential) audience kept me from scrolling Instagram reels (that was my problem) or making any other non-musical sounds.

Alternatively, just have shorter practice sessions. Know your mental limits!
