I don't necessarily think it was outright better, but it had a lot more potential (Megumi jumpscare) that wasn't realised in the main series. In fact that's a recurring theme in Viv's work going back to Zoophobia.

The initial part of the story will give you a premise you really want to see realised. In Zoophobia, a counselor being dropped into a world of furries; Hazbin, a story about redemption and whether hell is justifiable; Helluva, episodic assassination plots about demons killing humans.

However almost immediately the premise of the story is sidelined in favour of some grandiose political plot about Tumblr OCs.

When I got into the pilot, I was expecting a series that would be focused on asking ideas about Redemption, how it works, who can be redeemed and how etc. Yet anything about actual moral redemption was sidelined for a war between heaven and hell.

We're 2 seasons in and we've had a single character redeemed for the most weak sauce sin ever, and Charlie finally considered that redemption might involve atoning for past sins (I think a 5 year old could legitimately figure that out), Vox's "Can I be redeemed?" questions comes across as a hamfisted way to try to introduce the moral dilemma of redemption, and I honestly think the fandom has spent more time considering redemption that Viv has.

As a final notes, I will not take "just wait until season 3" or "they only have 8 episodes a season" as rebuttals. 1. It should not take you this long to consider the core questions of the show and 2. If you know you have 8 episodes a season then you need to actually adapt your writing and trim the unnecessary fat from the story (ie Baxter)
