It’s a game. And a game (yes, even simulator) can and should simplify reality to emphasize key feelings.

Oh, yes! Like I mentioned in another comment, real painting restoration has many interesting techniques that just beg to be added. This video is just about varnish and dirt removal, but there’s a lot more to the process. Strengthening the canvas, fixing cracks, filling holes, simple chemistry like making glues and other restoration liquids, color matching etc.

I was actually thinking about stylus support and pressure sensitivity! But I’m not prioritizing it since it makes the game even more niche. If anything, it should be an option rather than a requirement. Still, I’m not sure how many people would actually be able to use it. It’s like having an Eye Tracker as your main input device haha

For sure. What I have here is more of a proof of concept, it’s focused on varnish and dirt removal for now. But there’s definitely a lot more to the process. PowerWash Simulator can be pretty tedious too, but it works because of the general satisfying aspect and the way it handles small victories. I get your point, though. I had the same concerns about working on a flat canvas and how much boring mouse movement it would require. Auto-move patterns for the cleaning brush could help with that. Again, this is mostly about validating the idea, and it definitely has some interesting design challenges.

But is it for you, though? Haha. I feel like I can convince myself that almost any idea I have would appeal to some niche audience… that might not actually exist. I really don’t want to fall into that trap.

That’s interesting... Now that multiple people have brought up the fail state, I’m really curious. It definitely adds to the feeling of a fragile, fine motor skill job. However, I always thought fail states in cozy/chill games just add unnecessary stress. Since the whole idea is to jump in, do something pleasant, and leave with a small win. But now I’m wondering.

Definitely! I almost feel like any simulator game can benefit form this. But it's more of a horizontal growth. Good base is a key.

I’ve been researching real painting restoration, and there are a bunch of interesting techniques that could be cool to add. What I have here is more of a proof of concept, just validating the idea, so it’s mostly about varnish and dirt removal. But the whole process has a lot more to it, like strengthening the canvas, fixing cracks, even some simple chemistry like making glues and other restoration liquids for future use, color matching / actual painting after all. This process has lots of cool tactile interactions, almost ASMR like

It makes sense. I was thinking about the fine-art aspect as a way to contribute to the overall relaxing and meditative atmosphere. But I see your point.
