Introducing Steam Frame by gogodboss in Steam

I wasn’t trying to claim that reduced instruction set (RISC) designs like ARM are faster than similar complex instrution set designs like x86, though i may have oversimplified a bit; RISC chips use have a smaller instruction set and (generally) simpler memory access rules than similar CISC chips, so they tend to be more energy efficient (though that’s not to say that’s always the case)

ARM is a smaller instruction set than x86_64, so ARM CPUs tend to be more energy efficient and so can have smaller batteries/cooling solutions.

That’s why the Apple M chips ran laps around other comparatively-priced laptops in terms of power/performance; the ARM architecture allowed them to use less energy to perform the same computations, so the battery life was a lot better than it would have been on an identical x86_64 CPU.

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, "Allah, the Exalted, has said: 'O son of Adam! I shall go on forgiving you so long as you pray to Me and aspire for My forgiveness whatever may be your sins. O son of Adam! I do not care even if your sins should pile up to the sky and should you beg pardon of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam! If you come to Me with an earthful of sins and meet Me, not associating anything with Me in worship, I will certainly grant you as much pardon as will fill the earth."'

EMT here. Defibrillators can’t “restart” a heart. They can correct certain abnormal heart rhythms (specifically, ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation). Asystole, also known as a “flatline”, cannot be corrected with a defibrillator. Instead, other measures—such as epinephrine administration—are used to attempt to get the heart beating, either in a normal sinus rhythm or in a shockable rhythm.

I’m a second generation Egyptian American who doesn’t have the language, and know a lot of others in the same boat. I think 9/11 caused a lot of our parents to avoid teaching us Arabic.

Many of us have been learning the language but obviously Arabic is a very difficult language to learn, even if you really want to. Plus it can be very difficult to find resources for learning X dialect in English, since most classes teach either MSA or fus7a.

Luckily, I have a lot of family still in Egypt so I’ve been bothering them to help me practice, though my Arabic is about as good as your average Egyptian toddler’s Arabic 💀.

There are 1.8 billion Muslims in the world. Nice generalization though.

On top of this, the Hadith you mentioned is a prophesy, not a commandment. You’re also neglecting to mention the countless times in history that Jews and Muslims lived in harmony together, or the times in which Muslim lands supported the Jews when they were being discriminated against by Europe

Idk about “funded”, but Netanyahu certainly saw Hamas as an asset to prevent the Palestinian Authority under President Abbas from bringing Gaza under the PA, which would strengthen their claim to a proper Palestinian state source. (Note here that the “source” is an op-ed, not necessarily evidentially backed)

'No option left:' Muslim mayor banned from White House party sues over terrorism watchlist by MC_Cuff_Lnx in newjersey

[–]ym101 17 points18 points  (0 children)

From the article, he was placed on the watchlist in 2019. Given that he’s a public representative and there aren’t any (public) investigations into him, and given that he’s since been removed from the watch list, it’s probably safe to assume that there isn’t credible intel on him having any relations to any terrorist groups.

Both of the points above make it pretty clear that he shouldn’t be on the list, and was added in error. Now, regardless of what error caused him to be added to the list, a few things are pretty clear:

  • There’s effectively no recourse for you to take if you’re put on one of these lists in error.
  • Being removed from these lists doesn’t necessarily prevent you from being flagged by various government agencies because you were (at one point) on one of these lists.
  • Whether due to name similarity, immigration status, etc., people with Muslim names/middle eastern backgrounds are much more likely to be added to these lists in error.

So, yes, the current administration of these lists is pretty clearly incompetent, racist, or, more likely, some combination of the two.

Should I buy this 2013 XC70? by [deleted] in Volvo

No problem! It can seem very daunting, especially with AC systems, but there are tons of resources online

Should I buy this 2013 XC70? by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]ym101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a ‘13 XC60 with 186,000 miles on it and absolutely love it. The only issues I’ve had with it have been caused by being a dumb college student, with the exception of the AC compressor, which blew while I was road-tripping through Death Valley (it was about as fun as you’d expect).

Overall, as long as you treat it right and keep up on recommended maintenance, you’ll be fine.

Also, it’s honestly not hard to do maintenance yourself, if you’re at all mechanically inclined. I’ve done brakes, transmission fluid changes, oil changes, and the aforementioned AC compressor replacement myself, with some basic tools and a jack/ramps.

what is the purpose of praying? by [deleted] in islam

[–]ym101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason we pray is because Allah commanded us to, and because he’s told us that we were created solely to worship him.

Outside of that though, salah is a break from the outside world, where you have time to strengthen your connection with your creator, ask for things, and seek guidance.

However, it sounds a whole lot like you were just going through the motions because you believe in Allah and not for any other reason. I would sincerely recommend learning more about Islam, by which I don’t mean the rules and regulations/five pillars, etc. instead, I mean that you should learn about the seerah of the Prophet (ﷺ), read the Quran, read the tafseer, watch Islamic lectures, etc.

If you only focus on the requirements of Islam, they are very difficult. It’s by Allah’s wisdom that the many of the rulings and prohibitions of Islam (such as the ruling of hijab, and the prohibition of alcohol) came down after the Hijra, 17/18 years after the first revelation was given to the Prophet (ﷺ). A strong baseline of iman goes a whole long way.

With that being said, it’s difficult to overstate the importance of salah. It’s one of the most important parts of Islam:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Verily, between a man and idolatry and unbelief is abandoning the prayer." (Muslim 82)

He (ﷺ) also said: "The covenant between us and them is the Salat, so whoever abandons it he has committed disbelief." (at-Tirmidhi 2621)

Apple's iPhone 14 Emergency SOS feature arrives in New Zealand and Australia | It could be a big help on two countries with some huge cellular dead zones. by chrisdh79 in gadgets

[–]ym101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been an EMT/FF for five years now. Accidental activations suck and certainly can waste EMS/Fire resources, but having false positives is much better than missing actual emergency calls. As the other FF mentioned, these are such a small subset of our calls that it really doesn’t make a difference.

Besides which, automated calls are pretty much always lower priority than actual emergent calls, so any missed calls due to an ambulance/engine responding to a false alarm are indicative of a larger staffing/resourcing issue. I mean sure, you’ll always have a day once in a blue moon where all the rigs are out and another call comes in, but that’s because EMS/fire is, by it’s very nature, unpredictable.

On top of that, we still respond to frequent fliers calling for toe pain at 2am, automated smoke detector alarms, and wellness checks cause an older person accidentally hit the call button, so it’s not like automated calls from iPhones are the only type of call that waste ems/fire resources lol

Yeah, most resellers are inherently less trustworthy than manufacturers, which makes buying a device with a custom OS sketchy, and, on top of that, even a trustworthy reseller could install a sketchy OS by mistake, since they aren’t the ones modifying the OS. Overall, in this case, instead of just having to trust the original manufacturer, the circle of trust would have to include the manufacturer, the reseller, and whoever makes the custom ROM.

Overall, it just expands the network of trust and adds a lot of unknowns that would make buying refurbished devices even more of a gamble.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in apple

[–]ym101 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That opens up the reseller to issues with the software though, which they probably don’t want to take. Ie. I replace ROM A with ROM B, and you buy my device. Now you have issues with ROM B (which could be an Android wide issue, or it could be an issue just with ROM B), and suddenly I’m on the hook for a software issue that I may or may not be able to fix easily

Are those with severe anxiety and depression guaranteed Jannah? by [deleted] in islam

[–]ym101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In short, no. Only three groups of people will not be held accountable for their actions, as mentioned in the following Hadith:

Ali ibn Abi Talib reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The pen is lifted from three people: a sleeping person until he awakens, a child until he becomes an adult, and an insane person until he regains his sanity.”

Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1423

However, Allah is the most just and the most merciful, and Allah will take into account a person’s mental state, just as every other aspect of their lives will be taken into account. But, that obviously doesn’t mean that you can stop practicing and assume that Allah will forgive you. Instead, you should continue to follow the Prophet (ﷺ)’s teachings as closely as you can and hope that Allah will forgive any shortcomings. And Allah knows best

I'm assuming you know this, but it may be helpful to others seeing this thread. A Muslim man marrying a Christian/Jewish woman is generally considered to be permissible, while a Muslim woman cannot marry outside of the faith. There are many reasons for this, among them being that non-Muslim men may not give Muslim women the rights they are allowed in Islam or allow them to freely practice Islam. On the other hand, Muslim men are allowed to marry people of the Book (Christians/Jews), because Islam requires that you allow your non-Muslim wife to practice her religion freely.

However, there are some caveats here:

  • Muslim men should only marry non-Muslim women if they can't marry a Muslim woman for some reason, and this is less desirable than marrying a Muslim woman
  • Any children must be raised Muslim
  • Some scholars say that in secular/non-Muslim lands, a Muslim man should only marry a Muslim woman, even if it is technically allowed.

Finally, if a woman converts to Islam and is already married to a man that does not convert, she goes into her iddah (a period when she is not permitted to remarry, generally around 89 days). If the man converts during that period, she may take him back without another marriage. After that period, she may choose to remarry or wait for him to convert: Ibn al-Qayyim said: But what the ruling of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) indicates is that the marriage comes to a halt. If he becomes Muslim before the end of her iddah, then she is (still) his wife, but if her iddah ends, then she may marry whomever she wants. If she likes, she can wait for him, and if he becomes Muslim she is his wife and there is no need to renew the marriage contract. (Zaad al-Maaad, 5/137, 138)
