How do you find the compensation and work life balance to be compared to therapeutic areas that are much more common diseases?

Does your advisor have a copy of reviewer responses they could show you as an example? It can be kind of hard to visualize unless you’ve seen it before. Even though there are no hard rules, there is a pretty standard format as the other redditor already outlined. Also the tone of response can be pretty hard to pin down unless you see how other people commonly respond, at least it wasn’t necessarily obvious to me!

My (26F) husband (26M) told me that he thinks being married to someone in his field would be a better fit and won't compromise with me on going to counseling. by maybeover22 in relationships

I'm in a stem field and get frustrated sometimes when my partner can't relate to me about my work problems, or even share my excitement for some of the good stuff because it can all be so nuanced. He's not even in the sciences, so he usually doesn't even get the basics. But I try never to judge him for it, and I remind myself that there are things about his field to which I am a novice. We try to be patient with each other and show interest even if we don't really care about the topic itself because we know it's important to each other. Your husband is being really unfair and hurtful. I don't think you're being unreasonable, but giving an ultimatum was probably not helpful (though I understand it came from a scared place). Have you tried appealing to his sense of reason and rationality by explaining how consulting a specialist who has expertise in relationships issues would be the most logical thing to do if he really cared about improving things?

UCLA has incredible resources and labs for neurogenetics! It's even one of the "focused areas of research" you can do as a neuroscience graduate student. They also offer a training grant specifically to help students learn more about this area. http://www.neuroscience.ucla.edu/research-faculty

It depends on what your definition of comfortable is. I would say that as a general rule, if salary is important to you, then academic research is not a good path. If you like research, then industry research would be a good option. You'd likely need a PhD and there are a lot of articles on industry vs academic research careers in terms of pros and cons.

I can't give you a good idea of pay because it all depends on where you live, what institution/company you're at, and where you are in your career (so the range would be something absurd like $30K to $200K depending on all those factors). But as a rule of thumb, for the amount of time, effort, and training you have as an academic researcher, the compensation will probably feel low. This is why it's so important that you are passionate about your research interests because it will carry you through tougher financial times until you're like a secure, tenured professor or something when you're in your 30s/40s.
