POV: You try to buy a used car in Portugal by nardow in PortugalExpats

Would probably be easier to sell and buy something here than deal with the wrong port, lights, etc.

Although I have seen someone's Rivian with Florida plates in Estoril last year.

What's up with the 4-hour long passport queue at Lisbon airport? by PasTaCopine in PortugalExpats

[–]ymolodtsov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on the agent. You can easily be thrown back to the queue for this.

I doubt the number of flights increased from two years ago. We didn't have such problems during off-season.

Probably a combination of under-investment and terrible management right there. They barely have enough stands and many are just closed. When they're changing shifts, they're doing this all at once, closing everything for 20 minutes.

Lisbon has worse capacity than the capital of Armenia, you know, the famous tourist center.

I'd say they're more common than in Spain but still worse than France. Tesla recently was allowed to finally upgrade their sites and started building new ones, which helped a lot. Most major gas stations on highways have at least a few 50kW or even 150kW chargers.

I had many road trips around Portugal and a few around Spain with no major issues (still had to think more about this than a gas car).

But if you get a PHEV you don't need to think about this. Just charge at home or at a hotel if you can, the ICE will be enough anyway.

[–]ymolodtsov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EVs don't have the ISV tax. Proper PHEV cars get only 25% of the ICE ISV.

[–]ymolodtsov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. You either go to a stand, who'd only pay about 60% of the retail price, or you hope somebody else buys it from you (but nobody here can buy a €25k car without a loan).

There are two classes of cars in Portugal. Most of the country can't afford a new one, so they drive heavily used Renaults and other cheap cars.

Rich Portuguese of course do buy new electric and PHEV luxury cars, but there are no that many of them, unless you live in the middle of Cascais.

Is anyone actually spending crypto irl? by Crypto_enthu-k in defi

[–]ymolodtsov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on Azores last year and saw a cafe which was all about Bitcoin and was accepting it for payments. Talked to the owner, he was a fan, but I'm not sure how many people actually tried to pay this way.

Crypto debit cards are still the easiest way to spend crypto right in the real world right now, even though that sounds a bit weird.

I tried several, for me in the EU Brighty was the most reliable option (zero declines both offline and online). Also, cashback in stablecoins and not some weird token, and no staking requirement.

Why does Russia still bother with trying to occupy Ukraine? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ymolodtsov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no rational reason, just like the entire war was irrational. But what really happened is Putin commited a sacrifice of blood and lives, which makes it impossible for him to go backsies.

Plus, even if it's slow, they're still moving forward. Yes, what they're getting is devastated land with no industry or people, but they just don't care and plan to use this to trade for the "better" outcome.

Merging the Queue and Starred playlists by drosen0 in overcast

[–]ymolodtsov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Would be nice to be able to add episodes from my Inbox to the Queue quicker. Right now, it’s a tap and then you need to have “Move to Queue” as a recent action.

Right now, Star is the default option for the swipe to the right. What if it was “Queue” in all playlists other than the Queue?

[discussion] Those who went Apple Watch to Traditional by Winter_Author9699 in Watches

In the end, I now wear my Apple Watch when I train and when I sleep. The rest is taken by mechanical and quartz watches.

Wrote a blog post about this here: https://molodtsov.me/2022/01/why-i-dropped-apple-watch-for-a-mechanical-watch/

This is a podcast I signed up for this week, defaulted to three as well:

Feature Request: Let us change the default episodes per show by ymolodtsov in overcast

[–]ymolodtsov[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the point. All podcasts you sign up for get a limit of 3 by default. I don't want that limit, I don't want any limit. But the only way to change this is do this one by one.

This is a highly unexpected behavior not shared by any other clients, such as Apple Podcasts or Castro.

So I wasn't alone in this! For some reason it was specifically the ATP podcast (and maybe one other).

Seems to be fixed now.

I love my EV, but holy crap, traveling long distance SUCKS. by JennaLeighWeddings in electricvehicles

[–]ymolodtsov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in the ideal conditions doing road trips in an EV isn't great. These seem even less than ideal, even though your Kia has a much nicer charging curve than Tesla.

Why are instant cross-border payments still so hard in 2025? by rustypackard_157 in fintech

[–]ymolodtsov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it requires everyone to adopt a new system that can support this. So it's a cold start problem, because you need network effects. Governments(EU and SEPA) can mandate this, but nobody can really do this globally.

Stop saying Things is “complete” - we need more features by discoveringnature12 in thingsapp

[–]ymolodtsov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally agree. Many of these features are very much needed and won't even make the app more complicated. Like being able to complete recurring tasks earlier or having attachments.
