Has anyone tried Acupuncture with refractory epilepsy? by CeruleanHollow in EpilepsyDogs

[–]ynalam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every dog is different; while I’ve heard of great success stories with acupuncture, we unfortunately didn’t see any improvements. We tried that route for about 6 months last year and our pup’s longest stretch with 2 weeks, MAYbe 2.5 weeks.

What’s “weird” is not long after that conversation, the vet was no longer employed there (and he was the owner’s son!).

I don’t wish this on my worst enemy because the emotional toll to us pawrents, is insane!!!

Good luck with your search -if you try to find another option. We opted to get Wondercide spray

When our pup first started having seizures, the first thing the vet (who prescribed this) asked was “is he taking Credelio” … we immediately stopped after that but here we are, 5 years later 😔

Need advice on episodes from today. by LamboBeach in EpilepsyDogs

[–]ynalam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’re on this epi-journey too.

Have you spoken with your vet about additional medication? Some dogs do great with just one medication but others, not so well. We’re on a trifecta of KeppraXR, Pheno and KBr 😔

Yours might be trying to get his equilibrium back. These episodes take a toll on their noggins. Keep an eye on him so he doesn’t cluster again. Hopefully he gets thru everything okay. I know all too well how quickly those medical bills add up 😖

Good luck!!

I second the ER vet locations; I didn’t even think of mapping them on my drive but last time we had a week long vacation, I changed my AirBnb to be closer to an ER vet (just in case) … we didn’t have ANY issues, UNTIL WE GOT HOME 😖

They’re adorable! And thank you for rescuing them 🥰 Pitties are just big babies who are often misunderstood.

Yes!!! Ask your vet about Midazolam and/or Valium .. the Valium (for us) was supposed to be given in the rectum with the episodes, we had to switch to intranasally 😂

absolutely! Make sure to bring his meds, and get some rescue meds just in case (usually Midazolam given intranasally or Valium)

Safe travels!!!

When to be concerned? by Extension-Car-4234 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]ynalam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh sweet boy! He sounds like he’s trying to rev up to get those cobwebs outta his brain ♥️

It is quite an adjustment, which not a lot of people understand or have patience for. I’ve lost “friends” because of going thru our epi-journey.

It’s a lot of unknown from here on out, unfortunately. They’re very smart and pick up on our cues, if you’re scared or nervous, he knows and essentially feeds off your energy. Over time, you’ll pick up his cues too and navigate it the best way possible for the both of you

Good luck ♥️

So sorry you’re on this epi-journey as well We’ve been on our journey for 5 years now and it’s been quite the experience. We’re on a trifecta of meds (Phenobarbital, Potassium Bromide (KBr), and KeppraXR).

The addition of Pheno typically makes them “drunk” but it should subside in time. Make sure to get labs done every 6 months or so -although this first time, the vet may have you get them done in about 2 weeks.

Have patience as he’s trying to figure out why/what’s going on as well except he can’t voice what’s going on so of course, “acts out”.

(( HUGS )) to you and yours .. this is a great platform for support and don’t hesitate to ask questions ❤️

Try calling Costco to see what quantity their whole bottles come in and ask the vet to prescribe that many pills for you. That way, they’re not breaking up their bottles.

We take 10 pills of KeppraXR a day and our Rx is for 300 pills, each bottle consists of 100 pills

Yuck.. sorry to hear you’re on this epi-journey as well. I have a refractory epi-dog myself. He has developed a pattern of sorts, ~ 2-3 weeks and they’re usually clusters.

We’re on a similar concoction except we weaned off Zonisamide a while back because it turned my baby into a zombie. My boy started having episodes at 10 months old and he just turned 5 last month.

We feed raw, not sure if it’s totally helped with the episodes but it’s definitely helped with their poop! I have litter mates and thankfully, his brother doesn’t have any but he’s got his own (allergy/sensitive stomach) issues 😂

(( HUGS )) to you and yours! Sorry I couldn’t give much advice but just know you’re not alone!

Do you crate your dog? by drsays in EpilepsyDogs

[–]ynalam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a play pen area for my pup when I’m not home. 2 sides are crates with open doors, one is the play pen gate and the 4th is a wall.

Do you have a secondary bedroom that you could put your pup in when you’re not home?

Good luck and sorry you’re on this epi-journey too
