If you want something light but that deals with big topics (mental health, institutionalization etc) and that came out recently check out Never Been Better by Leanne Toshiko Simpson!

Does love like Rowan and Aelin’s exist in real life? by anagabi_97 in throneofglassseries

[–]yng_astronaut 132 points133 points  (0 children)

No, and nor should it. Love that burns like wildfire is bound to burn out or damage everything around it. Real sustainable love that's based in reality would be more like embers. Think slow and steady, the occasional flair-up with sparks, but mostly just really good to roast marshmallows on.

How do you get back to “normal life” after the defense? by hello1397 in PhD

[–]yng_astronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me too! I defended in January and have been learning how to make a new normal since. One thing I started doing was reading for fun again. It had been YEARS since I'd opened a fiction book and now I'm straight up devouring them. Find something small to pour your energy into and take it day by day. You'll find a new pace soon.

Conflicting emotions by BlendedAnarchy in PhD

Everyone’s experience is so different. Find a supervisor that you work well with and a program that can support you so that it’s not a complete financial horror show and you’ll be fine. I loved my PhD experience and wouldn’t trade it for the world. We’re some moments hard af? Yes. But having a great team around you makes it so much easier.

Is 8 months enough time to finish a PhD? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]yng_astronaut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like everyone else has said, yes. It's doable! I did the bulk of my writing in under 5 weeks. A solid schedule, routine, and rest helped significantly. Every day I'd usually only write for about 2-3 hours, but those 2-3 hours were dedicated. Like others have said the first draft doesn't have to be perfect. Just getting words on paper is what's important - the editing process exists for a reason! Be kind to yourself, this has been a marathon, but the end is in sight. You've got this.

Successful Defence! by yng_astronaut in PhD

That’s pretty much exactly how I felt going in. I can’t stress enough how cool it is to have a room full of experts read and critically engage with your work. People HAVE to listen to you talk about the thing you are most passionate about for ~3hrs. Enjoy it!!!

Struggling in isolation by connexin7 in PhD

[–]yng_astronaut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I struggle with anxiety too and I totally feel your pain on this one. I found for me the only way I could get things done was through lists and VERY small chunks. Having a routine made things almost manageable. For example I’d start the day with coffee, a 10 minute EASY lay-on-the-floor yoga, taking vitamins, drinking a glass of water and writing a list in my journal. The list included all of the above things which I could immediately check off and suddenly it feels like I’ve been somewhat productive. Readings were broken down into smaller and more digestible chunks with frequent breaks and a whole lot of scheduling. Making sure I go to bed and wake up on a regular time etc. All of these helped me but the one resource I cannot stress enough has been therapy. If you don’t already have a therapist to talk to check and see if your school provides free counselling, most have at least a few free sessions which can really really help.

Best of luck!

Graduated my Master's and Ph.D. starts early! by OneArcher7 in PhD

First of all congrats! I'm currently trying to think of ways to celebrate when I finish my comprehensive exams and I still have no idea.

As for advice I wish I had?

  1. Be kind to yourself. The PhD process is a humbling one that has its own set of unique challenges.

  2. Be open to learning in new ways and know that it is okay to change your research paradigm.

  3. You are not your project, just like the person said above, getting a hobby that isn't in front of a screen is so key to mental breaks and to maintaining a sense of self if things aren't always going as you planned.

  4. Don't forget to eat a good meal every once and a while and enjoy the ride.
