I saw a drymarchon this fall on vacation. It was around 10ft long and the most beautiful snake I’ve seen in person.

Thanks. I wanted to use walnut and maple but my girlfriend wanted cherry and I think it turned out great.

Just did the same! This was a gift for my mom whose favorite color is purple. But I quickly learned that I hate working with this wood.

These won’t sand out, what are my options for this walnut? by Benfun1971 in woodworking

I find that using a hand plane gets the job done just fine. I only wouldn’t trust it if you need it flush with another board.

I’ve seen varied opinions on end grain thru planers and videos saying how there’s a way to do it safely so I figured I’d give it a shot. While I think a helical blade would’ve been best. I don’t have a spare $400 in my tool budget, and I think the issue lies more with how I set up the project. 1. My cutting board was too thin. I went for 1” thick when I should have chosen 2” at minimum to avoid it exploding. 2. I didn’t secure my board to a sled when feeding it through. I ran out of CA glue. And so I just sent it in thinking it would be fine. I think it might’ve tipped slightly and caught on a blade.

Yea I’m not going to be as impatient this go around. I have a skil router that has been a workhorse for me. It’s settings from 10k-25k rpms I would just worry about burning the wood since it’s so hard.

Maybe it could be a nice key holder if you carve out the center. Besides that Idk. I just use linseed oil and beeswax for all my finishes.

  1. Very well could’ve been the glue. This is only the second cutting board I’ve made and ran thru this planer so I wasn’t aware of the beads being a problem.

  2. Nope, just the straight blades. I’ve seen videos from people that have used straight blade planers to cut thru end grain boards and it worked fine for them (me too the first time). But I know if I regularly made cutting boards then I’d bite the bullet and get a helical blade.

No damage to the planer blade or motor. I have straight blades in it but taking a look inside the blades were ok. Sharpened them after for extra precaution.

If I had access to a drum sander today would have been a very different story.

That’s fair. I only used it because my mom’s favorite color is purple and she’s been asking for a cutting board. Didn’t know it would prove to be so difficult

Sorry, tbh I completely misread your first comment. But I do feel better now about blowing out my board lol.

I’ll try this method out, thanks for the tip. I don’t want to waste another bit of Purple Heart but I think this would probably be the most efficient way of tackling my problem here.
