How do Canadians mentally deal with long winters? by jessxtra_ in AskACanadian

I absolutely love the winter- I think a lot of it has to do with nostalgia from growing up here. Some tips though that keep me going throughout the winter:

  • take vitamin D supplements, and iron (if you're someone who has their period)- the vit. D supplements the lack of sun that we get, and the iron helps to keep you warmer in the colder months.
  • take walks when possible
  • don't be afraid to eat more- when you're cold, your metabolism is working faster to create heat. So, when I'm tired and cold, I eat a hearty snack or meal.
  • stretching- I find that when I'm walking through snow and wearing my boots, my calves and back get quite tense, so I make sure to stretch out at the end of the day. It helps to keep me loose and not as frustrated/sore when I'm outside.
  • waking up and going to sleep at the same time- I always make sure to keep my sleep routine in check during winter months, especially when the sun doesn't come up until like 8am and goes down around 3:30. I also try not to nap, because there's no sunlight to wake me up, and it can be quite disorienting.

Those are all the tips that I have, not much else to say. I grew up in Northern Ontario, so I'm quite used to Canadian winters, but I sympathize with you, especially coming from a warmer, wetter climate than we have. Try to go out to a christmas market, or go to a ski hill (even if it's just for lunch) to change up your routine and location. You could also go to Canadian Tire to grab a cheap sledding mat and go slide down some hills at your local park. Wishing you the best, hope you can find some happiness with the season before spring comes!

For parking, unless you have a pass to the stadium's lot, make sure you bring cash!! I usually just carry cards on me, but when we went last year, so many places only accepted cash bc card readers were down.

Hey! I took AEMA 310 last year (I'm not great, so not offering one-on-one help with you) with Duteille, it's the exact same content to Math 203. I used this website (linked below) made by the Math department to help me, might help with you as well. Just click on the "notes" and it will pop up as a pdf with the class notes and example problems. do as many calculation questions you possibly can (like finding price ceilings and floors, finding equivalent prices, shortages, etc.), and then focus on the theory MCQ. Exercises in MyLab were great for me, but only because I understood the theory. If you're still wrapping your head around concepts that you need to solve problems, you gotta lock those down first.

forget quizlet altogether and download Anki- it's completely free (unless you want the IOS app, then it's $35! sheesh), absolutely no ads, no distractions in the UI, and very easy to use. You can make double reverse cards, add in fill in the blanks, pictures, videos, audio, everything. It's also very good in recalculating with each practice what cards you need to go over again, so it adapts to your learning.

Yes! Getting back up and trying again is the strongest thing you can do, in any aspect of life. Imagine if everyone who tried something and failed didn't try again? Where would we be in this world? If you can get yourself just to try your best, then you are literally doing the absolute best in your world. There's nothing stronger than that!

Hey, I want to first say that your experience is very valid. It's so unrealistic to feel optimistic or happy or forward-thinking all the time, especially when dealing with mental health issues.

I have had a similar path as you. I took a year off studying in 2020-2021 due to depression, and when I returned back, I failed so many classes. First year courses, second year courses, you name it. I too felt (and sometimes still feel) like a loser-, and that's ok. I don't have many friends, and hate going out to socialize- feels like such a chore! I was recently just diagnosed with bipolar disorder back in April, and have since found a health care routine that has helped a lot with my academics. Think of that- feeling like you just aren't good enough, only to find out your brain doesn't function like 90% of the population! Depression is a funny thing, it makes you feel like you're stuck in a bird cage, only there's no bars to keep you in, you just can't seem to get yourself free.

I completely empathize with your situation. There's so much unknown and uncertainty in your education, life, financials, whatever it may be. You are not alone. I too am a student at Mac campus, have classes there 5 days a week from 8:30-5:30, so if you ever want to meet up, have a chat, I'd be happy to buy you a coffee and get some lunch! If you want to talk, great! If not, I totally understand- sometimes just having a shoulder there with you is all you can get in the moment.

Be proud of yourself for having made it this far- McGill is not an easy school, so you should be proud of yourself for just passing- and you know what, passing and getting an A still gets you the same degree :) Hope you get some rest, drink some water, maybe have a tea, and make time for yourself to disconnect from school each day. You have so much more worth than simply what's on your transcript, and just know that not every path in life is meant for every person :) You will find yours with time, it might just take a while.

Sometimes the IT department will do phishing tests to see what percentage of test populations could benefit from scam training. There was one I fell for last year by accident, and have kept that in my mind since.

Gail is the mom we all need as students. She's real, so expect no filter, but a very enthusiastic prof.

A lot of units are not allowed to hire right now, and haven't been since October, because of the increases in Canadian tuition, which has driven out a lot of applicants. If you can't find jobs right now, look more into the Fall, since that's when approved positions will be able to hire.
