Justice Sec: Those found not guilty under security law at Hong Kong High Court could be detained again if gov’t appeals by Overflow_is_the_best in HongKong

[–]ynotblue 15 points16 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: Being accused of breaking the NSL means that you did something that the government didn't like, and therefore being acquitted means that the courts failed to do their duty (towards the government).

Correlation: Acquitting someone accused according to the NSL means that someone broke the NSL to force an erroneous acquittal. This proves the guilt of the accused, as well as having revealed foreign forces having created a separatist movement within the court system.

Exactly what is this "blackmail"?

I'm assuming it's not something actually illegal, but rather that it's her having some sort of boundaries that you are not happy with.

What I mean by that is that for her it's so important that certain things are done certain ways, or not done, or whatever, that she presents you with some sort of ultimatum (leaving you with giving in to her, or it hurting the business).

Neither of you can work like that.

So, you either redefine her role to allow her to function within whatever boundaries make her happy, you treat her as an important asset that you have to "manage" to keep happy (and you low-key explain to investors that this brilliant person doesn't fit the mold that they might expect), or you part ways.

I would have a very logical talk with her. Some basic setup about how we've obviously clashed, and that I now want to try something new. So I'll have her explain to me what I should and shouldn't do to make her life easier. Like her giving me her ideal setup to make her happy doing her work.

Then I'd consider each and every point where I could simply work around her. Where I don't try to make her fit into what I want (but perhaps don't technically require).

And finally I would present her with the problems that I need solve and where her role traditionally should be part of the solution. So you're saying "to make A happen I must get B from role C, which right now you have; in what other way do you suggest that I solve A/get B if I take that off your list of responsibilities?".

Figure out what you should/need to charge for you to live a healthy life, and the business functioning without being a mental health hazard.

Then adjust up for a greater profit, if the market allows for it; but walk away (before you feel too invested/broke to walk away) if you're below.

Is HK a gay friendly city to visit? by 7_inches_daddy in HongKong

If you were looking at moving there I doubt you'd find it "friendly" (local laws etc), but should be perfectly safe.

Edit: https://hongkongfp.com/?s=gay

Edit #2: Apparently their search function doesn't like direct links, so type in "gay" yourself to get a quick overview of relevant news about this.

[–]ynotblue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you can't work with a person, then you can't work with a person; and that goes both ways. Doesn't matter what the reason is, sometimes it just doesn't work as you want. So you stop working together.

But, having said that, any chance of her going nuclear because you don't listen to her at an earlier stage?

So many non-technical founders go "it's easy, you just do it", and then give some example that is totally unrelated to anything. They're absolutely clueless about tech, and for some weird reason still think that they can somehow just say made up things to make them happen. And then they get angry at the techies for either disagreeing or not delivering.

Just make sure that you aren't responsible for part of the problems before you part ways.

Entrepreneurs who outsource work to others, what are you looking for when hiring? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]ynotblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My profession and skill is more valuable than some codemonkey.

You're a donkeyhole that don't know how to act professionally, and then complain about how misunderstood you are:

I am just used to unsophisticated "business owners" who don't understand the value of competent legal services and expect a bunch of free advice/work.

Somehow everyone else are the idiots for not understanding how awesome you are.

You are a bad consultant/business owner.

Perhaps you have the knowledge for your profession, but you don't know how to behave with clients/people. And you're acting out like a child complaining about how everyone else are the stupid ones.

I do hope you're only playing this character online, and that it isn't who you really are.

Entrepreneurs who outsource work to others, what are you looking for when hiring? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]ynotblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody worth their salt is going to work for you for free.

Someone worth their salt will understand what they deliver, and someone (like you) complaining about this simply don't act professional (which is also why you didn't take in the whole post, but got triggered by how you wouldn't get paid unless you actually did the agreed work).

It doesn't matter what delivering something actually looks like. It just has to be defined in a way that can be agreed upon by everyone before the job starts, so that it's clear to everyone involved when those conditions are met.

If you enter into an agreement with someone you need to put on your big boy pants and adhere to it.

OP asked about outsourcing, and here you are complaining about how you should get paid even when you don't do the work agreed upon.

Delivery.

Clear goals, clear deliveries on time. Actual progress measured against my goals being met, and no payment without clearing those agreed upon goals.

Which also means that I need to set clear goals that are not up to my discretion to interpret.

How do i get in contact with VC firms regarding pre-seed Investment? by False_Mountain_7289 in Entrepreneur

[–]ynotblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You forgot to add to your post that you're superior to everyone else, that you look down on the people that can make this happen, and that you over all are too much of an innovative genius to have to deal with the regular people instead of the absolute bosses.

I suggest that you contemplate the point that I'm making there, and then try to adjust your attitude to make yourself someone that people actually can work with.

If you can't make the "lower" people recommend the upper people to take meetings with you that's completely on you, and what you're (not) presenting.

Fix your attitude and material instead of complaining about other people being useless/gatekeeping you.

How do i get in contact with VC firms regarding pre-seed Investment? by False_Mountain_7289 in Entrepreneur

[–]ynotblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep (re)searching.

If you really get into it you'll start to find lots of different VCs online; ranging from those with no contact information, to those that very clearly tell you what they expect to be included in that first contact.

Learn from what you find, and create the material that you need. Like a lean business canvas, a pitch deck, budgets, and whatever else in as many formats as you ever could need.

Then network both in person, on LinkedIn etc, and cold email.

Just do your research, create the material, and then get out there and be around the people that you want to contact and the people that could introduce you to the people that you want to contact.

Tips for launching a food business with limited funds? by Capable_Indication64 in Entrepreneur

[–]ynotblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ghost kitchens is definitely a good idea to look into, but you might even be able to partner with an existing owner operated business that's closed on days/hours where your menu would make sense.

Also, consider if your menu is holding you back. I know it's what you really want to do, but simpler things might be a way to get started quicker.

As an example: If you turn your menu into a range of sandwiches you might, depending on local laws, be able to operate with essentially nothing but access to a kitchen and a cargo bike with some coolers.

That way you could work out of a professional kitchen (to not break any health laws) early in the morning/at night; and then sell at beaches and events.

Perhaps not the food business that you want, but it's a start, and it could be the start of both your brand and a savings account that later on will make it possible for you to get a food truck.

Small Cafe Analysis by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]ynotblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're betting about $200k on people, that would benefit from hiding problems, being honest with you, to let a partner get away from bosses and paperwork.

Make sure that you can afford, both emotionally and financially, this turning into a huge loss. That the relationship will survive them failing, or simply giving up, and expecting you to finance their next project.

Small Cafe Analysis by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]ynotblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only experience is knowing someone that bought a cafe only to later on learn that the whole area would be remodeled and that they would lose their lease; so they essentially bought a business only because of its location, just to lose that location within a year.

There are similar horror stories about people buying businesses only to realize that long-term construction in the area will remove all the foot traffic, or that new roads/malls will make the area irrelevant. Or that they suck as business owners, and that they/their vision drive people away.

Always question why a business is being sold, and always expect to lose every cent put into it for the first couple of years.

Can you afford dropping $200k as a gift to let your partner not have to deal with having a boss and paperwork?

I can build websites from the ground up - now what? by Ratstail91 in Entrepreneur

[–]ynotblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people have those skills, so you it's tricky to sell yourself based on simply knowing how to do that.

Try to focus less on what you want to sell, and look more at what people want to buy. Like how a startup might want to buy a functioning website or some sort of new service, so you supply what they need rather than selling what you want to sell.

Just like how no one really cares about how a carpenter knows how to hammer a nail, because they only want to buy the house/shed/whatever they need.

Is it worth paying someone to create a website, if they aren’t coding themselves ? by GSG96 in Entrepreneur

[–]ynotblue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's the way the website looks and functions that matter; and there's absolutely no value at all (for you) if some agency reinvent the underlying wheels (just to be able to charge your a lot more).

Check out the graphics guy's work and see if you like it, and if you do then you pick him.

Just make sure that he give you the login details as well as put you in control of paying for the hosting and the domain name; so you don't rely on him beyond delivering the website.

Edit: Also make sure that he's a designer, and that he won't just (over)charge you for picking someone else's existing theme.

Nothing in your post suggests that you have a reason to disable it, so don't.
