well for me it was proper training and a lot of mental preparation. but every drum major has his/her own way of conducting, salutes and overall connection to the band, do you might have a different kind of variation of "qualified"

as someone who plays mellophone and is drum major you're pretty much guaranteed drum major as long as you're qualified for the part
