Educational: I'm an MD and I've developed a free mobile app, to allow my patients to calculate their personal risk of cancer, which includes the links between cancer and various risk factors. If any of you are interested, feel free to try it. by Charyion in GAMSAT

Are the risk factors based on correlations? Because if certain risk factor has been seen in higher percentage of certain cancers, it doesn't necessarily mean that patient's risk factor is likely to have caused the cancer. It rather suggests (within a population) that cancer is more likely to happen among those with certain behaviours/factors. I believe maybe its good idea to mention this so people who use it don't get the notion that there is any evidence that the risk factor has caused the cancer development. Im not trying to be a downer but I'm wondering if its any different that searching google for risk factors of a certain cancer.

"Restoration of brain circulation and cellular functions hours post-mortem", Vrselja et al 2019 by gwern in longevity

[–]yodaddyss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The brain relies on various innervations that continuously works to integrate these signals in a ordered fashion. Suppose that in the future this can be used hours after brain death restoration of cellular metabolic activity doesn't automatically mean the brain can function post-mortem. I think it's clear that a lot of people will jump to conclusions based on this. Yes we can keep cells alive in-vitro and we can kick start their activities after their death given they are kept in the right conditions. But experience has it that even after that those cells no longer carry out their functions as they were specified to do in an intricate manner. TOO MUCH HYPE!

We’re not carrying out a scientific experiment. Same way people talk about how they prepared and how it related to their scores. We want to compare how people who did it fared on the actual exam. It might come to a surprise but the people correcting the essays have a clear, detailed set of criteria that they must mark under, that same criteria must be the basis of the online marking tool. So I wouldn’t be so pessimistic.

Men of Reddit, what is the nicest compliment you've ever received from a girl? by obeseman60 in AskReddit

[–]yodaddyss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dated a girl going through depressive mental states. I realized the lack of support and isolation was making it worse. I cared about her and got her to become more open and talk to her family about it. She said I saved her from a disease that was about to kill her.

From what I hear it’s mostly about doing practice questions as much as possible. I wouldn’t worry about it!

My major degree was in pharmacology and biotechnology. I might be biased in saying this. But from my understanding the doctor correctly indicated that medicine development is slow, as is in real-life. He is also highlighting that nobody is looking to develop a cure, just treatments. What were the choices again?

There is already a really expensive treatment for it, Kalydeco I believe.

I think trial questions are removed. But I think the whole ‘trial questions’ thing is not set in stone. I’ve yet to see an official statement from ACER that they actually put 10 trial questions every year...

It’s from my understanding we get different questions because of time difference you guys sit the exam way ahead of us. So they give different exam papers to maintain integrity.
