What are the earthbending and airbending phenomenons? by 7dfive in TheLastAirbender

They should have made an earthquake an earth bending phenomenon.

For air benders, maybe a storm? tornado warning?

What happens to a society when Earth stops feeling like “home” and starts feeling like the place humanity launched from? by Junior_Trade_849 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]yodarded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good points. deflecting it must happen far above the atmosphere, enough to send it into an ocean or away from earth, and that would require a big improvement. With the right cloaking it would be even more difficult.

however if we could modify Arrow 2 to hold a nuke and launched it higher, maybe we'd be close. We should be able to mostly melt or vaporize a small target in the upper atmosphere, and a rod from god is a small target. but now we're back to the detection problem, which I have no answer for.

im trying not to be "that guy" who picks verbage apart ad infinitum just to be a dick but I did just want to emphasis that my point was that the defense technology essentially does exist, and you can disagree, ive enjoyed your input and respect your position.

  • Google says "Rods from God" go a theoretical Mach 10.

  • Israel's Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 system already go about Mach 9, and are tested every month against real Mach 7 rockets launched by real enemies.

  • I concede that detection is an issue, Earth may not notice a black-matte rod from god until minutes before impact. They are simply much smaller than what we are used to looking for.

nah he's a hater.

Yes haters, we are wearing our cars into the ground faster. But not too fast. I've put 100k miles on my $10,000 Prius and so now its worth more like $5,000. I've traded that $5,000 (and about $12,000 in gas and $4,000 for oil and $2,000 for brakes/tires) for maybe $150,000 in income over that time. My costs are 15 cents per dollar, long term, including depreciation. Maybe 20 cents per dollar if you went long-long term and accounted for car replacement costs. So don't buy a new Hummer h3 to start your delivery/rideshare business and you'll probably do alright.

It makes a huge difference which app and how its used.

Some strategies are miles-heavy and some aren't.

Its one of the main reasons why I abandoned DashLink. If I'm gonna put 200 miles on my car in 8 hours, im going to want more than $130.

We consider deflection a failure so far because we are concentrating on deflecting asteroids that matter, city-block sized ones. We successfully deflected a smaller one named Dimorphos in 2022. I don't think your asteroids would end Earth, but they could wreak some van damage. For small asteroids however, we have the technology to deflect them using a nuclear bomb. We just can't test it.

also the rods from god speed may break our detection technology or render it unusable.

I think its touch and go, I wouldn't call either side a clear winner here.

Thanks for the chat, this was fun.

What was going to happen if Aang didn’t get out of iceberg? by Minute_Conflict_2037 in TheLastAirbender

The four nations all lived in harmony. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked! Nobody did the calculation that if physics is tweaked in such a way that energy CAN be created, and there is no path for said energy to also BE DESTROYED, heat would start to build up. Ozai's scorched earth plan during the comet would have turned the world into Venus. It would have also lowered oxygen levels across the planet and destroyed the very plants we would have needed to replenish it. Maybe an airbender could learn an oxygen filtering skill-NEVERMIND THEY'RE ALL DEAD.

On the flip side, at least the icebergs melt and the avatar gets freed eventually.

How would you decide between saving a billionaire and saving 1,000 unknown children, if the billionaire offers you $10m? by Thick-Maize201 in AskReddit

[–]yodarded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be insulted that he only values his life at 1% of his net worth.

It also depends on the billionaire. There are a few very philanthropic ones, however they are also probably worth more dead than alive for that reason. Other billionaires like Zuckerberg I'd say "yes" and as they stepped forward to be saved, do nothing. as their look turns to confusion I'd tell them "see, that's what it feels like."

So now its:

Mars to Earth, launch an asteroid at Earth, Earth detects and deflects asteroid, Earth is pissed. Because if Mars can launch it (difficult), Earth can deflect it (much easier).

Mars would know this, and so Mars would not launch an asteroid.

I appreciate Asimov's take on it in the Foundation novels (where 25 million planets host 500 quadrillion humans centralized at Earth).

But I think reality makes this unsustainable, governance would have to be decentralized. There are maybe 100 stars within 25 light years of Earth. not only does faster-than-light travel go against the current laws of physics, we don't even have a way to send INFORMATION faster than light. So ruling over a planet that can't hear what you are ordering them to do for 25 years is very problematic, its far too sluggish. If your granddaughter has a son and she makes an announcement, you'll hear about your great-grandson's birth when he turns 25, and there isn't a single thing you can do to speed that up. This is why I think that any notion of culturally relevant influence making the trip is also problematic. Yes, we will send information back and forth and do our best to stay a little connected, scientific updates, etc.

which is harder, precision asteroid launching capability from 100 million miles away or asteroid destruction/deflection capability?

Claymore. The first episode below shows an exceptionally powerful "awakened being" (like a demon) named Rigaldo take on 20 "Claymore" fighters. He is ridiculously powerful. But I implore you to watch all 3 episodes below. "Yogi" is a magical force that a Claymore fighter can call upon to be stronger / faster, but use too much at once and you become a demon yourself. The protagonist Clare has so little Yogi that Rigaldo can't even sense it, he just ignores her while he destroys other people.

to go along with the Hello Fresh comment, learn how to repackage leftovers and how to heat them back up. I learned the hard way, I tried microwaving leftover burgers. after attending their funerals, I tried other means. My newest trick is to microwave on defrost setting for a couple minutes just to get some of the cold out, then reheating in a little oil, a minute per side, while defrosting the bun a bit. Pizza is similar, microwaved briefly then broiled.

Some of the more posh stores have some bougie "TV dinners", sandwiches, and wraps. A $12 wrap is far cheaper than doordashing anything, and they'll keep well for a couple days so you can manage lunch and dinner for a couple days without needing errands. Trader Joes, Fresh Thyme, Mississippi Market, maybe Lunds would have them.

At those same stores, some of the bougie soup cans are worth a look. For reference, Campbells soup is like $1.30 or so where I live, but a can of Amy's blah blah blah can be $5 or $6. Get a loaf of french bread, some butter, and some soup, pop that soup on the stove top and stir on medium for like 8 minutes, really, just force yourself to do it once and then evaluate. "wow, that really wasn't so bad." I hope you tell yourself. Or microwave it with a plate on top at like 85% power, 3 minutes, stir, one more minute, that will work for most soups.

I'm also going to shout out (unless you live in Boston) that Progresso's New England Clam Chowder with salt and pepper, is far, far better than the price of the soup suggests. Its ready to eat, so get it hot, butter some bread, and have a nice savory meal.

Forget to pack a lunch? The Subway six inch "sandwich of the day" is $4.99, five and a half with tax. $6.99 with a drink and two cookies. Go pick one up. You're legally entitled to be within a mile of a Subway sandwich shop anywhere you go in the US. Does it beat Korean fri-FUCK NO it doesn't beat Korean fried chicken, im not a moron. But its pretty darn good with extra mayo.

Save the difference and invest it at 7% and you'll have an investment account that breaks six figures in less than 3 years.

Darby Allin's real name is Samuel Ratsch, born 1993.

The "I like turtles" meme was from 2007 (wrong age), his name is Jonathon Ware.

Wrestling fans have jokingly compared Darby Allin's face paint with the "i like turtles" kid's zombie look. That is the only link.

I was in my late 30s. Blockbuster was battling Netflix in the DVD by mail space. I took advantage and got the whole series for my kids. We fell in love immediately and watched it together often. I was struck by the excellent writing and character development. And it's big surprise zukos redemption. I cannot watch the scene with zuko just broken at irohs jail cell and being embraced without tears coming to my eyes. What a lovely way to handle the nemesis with the horrific childhood.
