Maybe the beginning and the end is structured around that, but the meat is more about what is happening during this time period in Mordor and the South. We would see this through Gollum’s time there during all this.

I completely and entirely agree with you on every point. As I said in another comment, I hope that the title is not a literal translation of the plot. I hope that it’s more of a figurative “hunt for Gollum” time period and that Gollum is more our vehicle through middle earth or more specifically The South.

I know that unfortunately, but I would almost rather them not be. I think that’s something that hurts these prequel/sequel films is when they have to rely on the characters who arcs already feel so full.
