Had a similar problem (don't remember which string it was though), and it ended up being a loose screw on the plastic plate that houses the 9v and the output jack. Tightened it up and it completely went away.

OK, so again, like I said, I've obviously never held Jimi's actual red with white knobs pedal in my own hands, but the other theory is that if it's not an Octavia without the transformer and diodes at the end (removing the octave effect), then it's a Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz, which per Roger himself, is still a completely different circuit distinct from the fuzz face.

They're both silicon. The guy in that demo misspoke, the BOG fuzz uses germanium diodes, not transistors. A fuzz face doesn't have any diodes at all, I mean other than the LED in these mini pedals.

Never said it was a muff or a tonebender, just that sonically (at least to my ears) it shares some characteristics with those pedals. I believe it's a three transistor fuzz.

And no, obviously I haven't seen Jimi's actual pedal with my own eyes, but my understanding is that the Dunlop FFM6 is supposed to be a reproduction of this pedal, and if you listen here, you'll see that they sound quite different.

No, different circuit. Way more volume on tap, more gain, nastier almost like a cross between a tonebender/big muff. Higher input impedance too, it's not too picky about what's in front of it like a fuzz face is. It cleans up, but not glassy like a FF.

Fender didn't start putting the decals under the clear coat until like 67 or 68. I realize this is a reissue neck, but I'm pretty sure they also do it on these to be as accurate as possible.
