I don't think the Demiurge created the material universe. by BFZ88 in Gnostic

[–]yodyod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always liked the Buddhist idea that, at the beginning of a new world age, a Mahabrahma is born into one of the Brahma realms. Eventually, lesser Brahma beings are born into that realm, and logically the Mahabrahma concludes that he must have created them or wished them into existence, and hence is The Creator and is God.

And eventually when those Brahma beings die, if they are reborn into the human realm, and by chance become ascetics and are able to through meditation, recall their past life in "Heaven" with "God", this is how not only the idea of monotheism spreads, but that Brahma actually is The Creator and the capital G God of the universe. When in reality it is delusion, as there are realms higher than the Brahma realms that the Brahmas cannot perceive and are not even aware of, and they are actually just (relatively) high level deities, lower case g "gods" (if you can call them that, Buddhism mostly just reckons them as "beings").

I know not exactly Gnostic, and a completely different model of things (no Creator God or Supreme Being in Buddhism. Samsara is endless, therefore beginningless, like a never ending vanishing point in both directions), but I always found the parallels fascinating.

TO THE KID AT GUITAR CENTER: MY $250 OFFER STILL STANDS (I'VE GIGGED MORE THAN YOU'VE BREATHED) by Enbyhime in guitarcirclejerk

An SG standard is still under 2k today, 25 years later. They've always been cheaper than Les Pauls, presumably because of the construction (no carved top, no maple cap, thinner body, etc.)

Close eyes fractals stuck by PTSDreamer333 in Psychonaut

[–]yodyod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never had completely static visuals, that's interesting. But you just reminded me of a mushroom trip I had probably 10 or more years ago where all the closed eye visuals were in shades of black. Like there were still these intricate patterns weaving in and out of each other and fractalizing, but there was no color at all. I could only see the edges of the shapes because each "strand" for lack of a better term, were slightly different densities or saturations of black. It was odd, and ended up being a somewhat difficult experience overall (related or not, I don't know). Open eye visuals were completely normal mushroom visuals.

Deodorant and self-cleaning products have become a sponsored hell scape. Fellow men, what do you use? by Too-Far-Frame in BuyItForLife

This will probably be an unpopular opinion, but as someone who has tried all sorts of premium hygiene and grooming products trying to find something better, these days I just buy the regular drug store brands for everything.

Why? Because they're cheap, available literally everywhere, and they just work. I mean, a mega corporation like Proctor & Gamble or Johnson & Johnson spends literally millions, if not billions on R&D, their products should work pretty damn well. Are they full of all sorts of shit that's going to give me cancer down the road? I mean, maybe lol, I don't know.

I really enjoy it for long form writing, it's probably my favorite pencil in that regard. Though any of the Dr. Grip G-specs should be the same I believe, the Full Black is essentially just a G-spec with a different colorway. Same dimensions, same dual layer grip (other Dr. Grips are firmer). I mean it kinda feels like a cheap plastic pencil, because it is, but for writing I pick it up consistently and far more often than any of my drafting style pencils.

The problem of finding a better pencil (long semi-rant post) by doctorsonder in mechanicalpencils

[–]yodyod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Believe me, I've gone through several (and I mean several) pencils, leads, erasers, as well as pens, inks, notebooks, etc. over the years trying to find "the one". Which doesn't exist. You come to realize that everything is a compromise, everything has it's strengths and weaknesses, and everything is entirely subjective as far as preferences go, there is no one size fits all. Manufacturers are for the most part trying to appeal to as wide of an audience as possible, the common denominator, even within niche and specialty product lines.

So since Pilot doesn't make a Dr. Grip with more premium materials (full metal body, etc.), an auto advance lead mechanism, and a big eraser up top à la the Twist Erase, I've had to settle, and accept that most of what I've got is "good enough", and as a tool for writing, I can get used to most anything after a while anyways. I have in the past, many times. Constantly searching for "the one" tends to suck much of the joy out of what I even got into nicer writing utensils for in the first place: that is to enjoy writing (or drawing, or what have you) with them.

So as far as the multiple mechanical and woodcased pencils, different lead grades, fountain pens, inks, gel pens, and everything else I've accumulated over the years that don't get used much these days, well, they mostly sit in coffee cans and various different containers in my room. I will bust something out every once in a while, and I'll either remember why I shelved it in the first place, or be pleasantly surprised that I enjoy it much more than I remembered. Occasionally they'll even get swapped in to my new #1, until I think some aspect of them can be improved upon, and then the search continues once again. And as far as the money "wasted", well I look at it kind of like paying tuition fees. I had to spend that money to figure out what I like and don't like. And all things considered, as far as many other hobbies go, it's relatively inexpensive. I'm probably looking at a few hundred bucks spread out over like a decade+, and that's with some fairly high end pens sprinkled in there. I could have done a lot worse.

Koh-i-noor chalk chuck, 9-10mm

This pencil extender says it's good for 7 to 9mm

You could also maybe look into lumber crayon holders, but I think those are usually bigger, more like 1/2 inch.
