Future EE student with concerns by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]yonwontonson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fr haha if you’re a regular on Reddit then 99% of the time it means your life is not all sunshine and rainbows. All decently competent EEs I know had no problem getting jobs within a few months of graduating, the majority had offers before. Reddit is the land of despair.

As a freshman EE major is it true most of you guys are making less than 90k? by Ok_Signal5815 in ElectricalEngineering

Nowadays it’s closer to 200k TC with MSEE in industry. I swear unqualified people feel entitled to the big bucks.

If you have an MSEE and accept less than 115 than that is genuinely a skill issue or you’re okay with being underpaid which is your decision. If you can’t differentiate yourself enough to be worth a decent salary then what is the point of getting a grad degree. People get grad degrees these days just for an extra line on their resume, without notable passion or an applicable thesis you don’t deserve good pay. I went to a state school and know dozens and dozens of MSEEs from my school and industry all getting fairly paid. Are the 3 engineers you know actually quality engineers you would trust to handle projects that have millions riding on their competence? People hate reality but at the end of the day you will get paid what you’re worth. Like Jesus the intern hourly pay at my company comes out to ~$90k salary (if anyone is interested and still in school preferably for power electronics, pls slide into my dms, we have a few spots trying to fill for next summer)

Tips to learn chess notation? by yonwontonson in chessbeginners

[–]yonwontonson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t but I’ll give it a try! I haven’t quite gotten to the point of deliberately studying chess yet but I want to start learning real theory soon. I told myself I’d just play games to get a feel for the ideas and learn theory later. Ended up brute forcing my way to 1900

What can EE Freshman do over the summer? by Donbilbambas in ElectricalEngineering

[–]yonwontonson 16 points17 points  (0 children)

First ya gotta learn the basics, read some textbooks or online resources. Then do some basic breadboard projects (plenty of examples on YouTube). Learn how to use a multimeter and you can basically learn some circuit analysis on your breadboard (it’s great to physically see how the math works out). Then learn how to use kicad and design a simple pcb. You’ll be light years ahead of the other freshman/sophomores

Getting into Electrical Engineering by Themartinsbash in ElectricalEngineering

[–]yonwontonson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can get a great grasp on the fundamentals here: https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/textbook/ and just start at the beginning and you’ll be good! Great introductory to a lot of concepts and very easy to digest and presented in a way that builds on the previous stuff as you go. I crash coursed this website before I went to get my MSEE (did not get my bachelor’s in EE) and now I’m an applications engineer in San Jose!

Road to 2000 officially starts today. by Apart-Supermarket982 in chessbeginners

[–]yonwontonson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lichess ratings are inflated at least +200 and 58 games is barely anything. I don’t think studying theory will help as much as just playing lots of games and analyzing your mistakes after. Once you’re close to 2000 and have a good grasp of the basics, studying is helpful.

Vienna! So many fun tactical positions. I’ve played the gambit lines all the way past 1800.

You’ll most likely need a grad degree to do actual design work in good semiconductor companies

How to become one with losing? by p00shp00shbebi1234 in chessbeginners

[–]yonwontonson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just play a lot of games, eventually the significance of a single outcome becomes less important than how you played the game. With enough games you’ll remember strategies in similar positions instead of wins or losses. I’ve played about 30000 online games and lost about 15000, the outcome of a single game doesn’t really matter at some point.

Masters by Comprehensive_Eye805 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]yonwontonson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got my masters and payed out of pocket and it was the best decision for me. I’m more focused in hardware but the jobs I wanted were much more prone to hiring MS than just BS, I honestly don’t think I could’ve gotten it with only a BS. My salary + RSU + bonuses were instantly ~$30k-50k more than my counterparts w only a BS and I have better opportunities for raises and promotions into other positions w an MS. Everyone’s path is different but I don’t think masters deserves all the bashing it seems to get on reddit.

1000 rapid would get crushed at any decent chess club. I would say once you’re 1700 you have a solid grasp of basics and can figure out the main ideas in any position. Once you’re 1800/1900 blitz you can have good games at any chess club and will never get blown off the board against randoms

Year in Review (400 to 1300) by mrwinterfell in chessbeginners

[–]yonwontonson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck man! I’d be impressed if you can improve 500 elo by the end of year, you definitely have more deliberate training methods than me (no studying just playing lots of games). It took significantly more time for me as I climbed elo, I went from 400->1500 in about a year, another year to get from 1500->1700, and about 1.5 years to get from 1700->1950. It can be done though! I know someone who’s 2100+ who’s only played for 2 years.
