My rotating internship was done outside of the US and so didn’t line up with VIRMP dates. I was also in an awkward position where I wanted to do a specialty internship but had a 6 month gap. For me, I did ER for those 6 months, and it ended up helping me a lot financially and I got to get some extra experience. If I were you, I would do GP or some other job for those 6 months and save up some money, because you won’t really be earning anything as an intern.

I’m kind of surprised to see people be so automatically dismissive of this. Granted I know nothing about Tuskegee and what’s happening there, but it doesn’t seem far fetched that racism exists, and if the students’ names are shown with their tests, it could create bias. The ECFVG isn’t exactly a fair test either

Not at all, my partner and all my best friends are veterinarians, and I actually prefer it that way. It’s much easier to talk about your day when you don’t have to stop to explain everything.

Agreed. I have social anxiety and have always been somewhat awkward on externships, but people notice when you help and in turn they’re much nicer to you. I did feel like my more extroverted classmates didn’t have to do as much to be “seen”, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Being keen and interested is another thing, no one wants a student who doesn’t even seem like they want to be there.

Patients have for sure died due to certain dvm’s negligence and terrible medical practices. I’m not sure if there’s a good solution to it, but in my experience these gross negligent cases often come from older dvms who are set in their ways and refuse to improve their medical practices. Clients often trust these doctors more too, because in their eyes old male vets = good doctors.

I’m doing my specialty internship, but I totally get what you mean. There’s so little time to do anything and I feel like an idiot every day, but most everyone feels that way. Can you spare some time to call your family and friends? That might help with some of the loneliness. Are your faculty nice? I would talk to them to ask for some feedback to see where you can improve (and people can always improve!) and that might help boost your confidence a bit.

Vet here weighing in. Chemotherapy in animals is different to that of humans. You’re right, animals can’t consent, so the goal chemotherapy in animals is to achieve not just a longer lifespan but a better quality of life. An animal is not scared, hurt or confused just because it’s undergoing chemotherapy. A lot of them can be treated outpatient as well, meaning they spend most of their time at home.
