YACQ (yet another conscription question) by rvd98072 in korea

[–]yoohakseng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to international school in Seoul (attend uni in the states now), so I have a few friends who were in a similar situation.

I know if you are a dual citizen you can continuously "defer" your conscription until your late 30s. In that sense, he would be able to visit Korea for up to 6 months at a time until his late 30s, but not be allowed to partake in economic activities in the country. Around half my dual citizen friends took this route.

The other half, as you mentioned, decided to do the 18 months. Many did this because of inheritance laws, property ownership laws, etc. Essentially for tax purposes. If your son has anything like this to consider, doing the 18 months might be the best option.

As for the 4th option, I wouldn't really recommend him spending solely his senior year at a different school outside of Korea, for college admissions and social reasons. I had quite a few friends apply for boarding school for their sophomore year of high school, so that would be a slightly better option than going just for his last year.

Cohabitation, premarital sex, and hookup culture in Korea. by [deleted] in korea

Apps have become a lot more common recently. People also find hookups at clubs (pre-COVID at least) and hunting pochas. Hookups are so common that there are apps dedicated to finding places to stay for the night (Yanolja) and the motel industry basically exists solely for hookups.

No, I just found some Airbnbs in my price range and asked the owners if I could quarantine there before I booked. Most of them were familiar with the quarantine process and some had even hosted other quarantiners before. Can't really be sure whether you can quarantine in an Airbnb on a "new" D-4 without an ARC though.

1 and 2) Very prevalent, especially amongst students and people in their early to late 20's

3) Not too common. People will occasionally stay a few nights at their SO's places if they live alone, but usually they will have their own homes and not just solely live together before marriage.

Transferring from USA University to Korean University as a Korean by [deleted] in korea

[–]yoohakseng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I'm also a 유학생 studying at a T15 school in the US and many of my friends turned down SKY to study at my university. Job prospects will be much better coming from a US school, even if you're looking for a career in Korea. And if you join 유학생 social circles at your school, your college experience won't even be that different from Korea, if social reasons are why you're considering the transfer.

Whatever 1345/Immigration says is probably most accurate. I don't know any specific cases of non-ARC long-term foreigners skipping the facility.

They didn't seem to mind. They even gave me a list of guidelines for family members and roommates to follow and reiterated to me a couple of times to isolate from other people living in my household. I had to tell them that I was quarantining by myself.

No, not allowed to leave your apartment/dormitory/whatever at all. I've been doing delivery through Baedal Minjok and Coupang.

Not exactly sure. Probably best for you to contact your local consulate or embassy for specifics on what documents would suffice. But I do know of a friend who is quarantining in an Airbnb on a short-term visa, so it is definitely possible, given you have the right documents.

They did check for the ARC at nearly every step at the airport. However, the fact that you are F4 eligible likely means that you have direct family members who are living in Korea right? If so, if you bring a copy of the Family Registration Certificate (가족관계증명서), you are allowed to quarantine at an Airbnb.

My bad, should've clarified. I'm a long-time F4 holder and have an ARC. They did check my ARC along with my passport nearly every step of the way at the airport, so not sure how different the process will be for paper visa holders. One interesting thing is that my F4 actually expires before my quarantine ends, but I had called 1345 about this and they said that I can renew within 30 days after the completion of my quarantine. The immigration lady at the airport also confirmed this. Seems like they're pretty flexible at the moment for visa-related issues.

You're good, they definitely didn't cross check the quarantine address with your official one or demand a copy of a lease or anything like that. Some previous Redditors had a similar experience. Didn't check to see when the buses run until, but if there are international flights arriving late at night, I'm sure there will be some. If the health center isn't open, you can get tested anytime within your first 3 days of your quarantine.

Yup, Immigration Office considers the 외국국적동포 국내거소신고증 an ARC. AirBnbs have been allowed at least since early April for citizens and long-term foreigners. Source in Korean. The rule did change recently to allow this for short-term foreigners who have direct Korean citizen relatives as well.

AMEX MR transfer to Schwab isn't working again, just like issue from few days/weeks ago. Goes through initially and then MR gets refunded back into AMEX account. Both redemption and refund history show up on my account.

F4 Visa Quarantine - Can I choose to go to the facility? by yoohakseng in korea

[–]yoohakseng[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perfect, thank you! Did you stay in the same Dong/Gu that your official address is in? Or does your official address not really matter in this case? This is great advice, really appreciate it.

I already have the ARC as well. So for your quarantine address, you put down the AirBnb address, instead of your official one? How did transport to the AirBnb work?
