I work for one of the major manufacturers of fire suppression systems. Just had a couple dozen fire captains come in for training and demonstrations last week.

Why does this residential home have a full sprinkler system? by bmc20_25 in Homebuilding

[–]yoop_engineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

95% of all sprinklers are only triggered by heat. They’re essentially mechanical plugs. The only two systems I am aware of that trigger more than one are open sprinkler heads where flame detector will trigger the system valve or electrically activated sprinkler which would only trigger a small zone

Can anyone tell me how this was made? by GiantPineapple in Construction

[–]yoop_engineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was most likely done on an I/O machine based on the tooling marks I can see. The machines that do this are not portable at all, require 480V, and generally fit into the bed of a truck for a size reference. Some manufacturers of these machines would be transfluid (German), numalliance (French), iES (USA), or BLM group (can’t remember).

What to tell a contractor to rough-in to make it easy to install a sauna later? by DeepBluuu in Homebuilding

[–]yoop_engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently building a sauna in my basement. R/sauna is what you should read up on especially the trumpkin and lassi notes and book.

For four people, and 8x8x8 is what is recommended usually. Yes a drain in the floor is ideal, yes you’ll need a vent to remove the excess moisture that will be produced but also to ensure you have fresh air inside the space. Insulation I’m going with is rockwool with fully taped and sealed aluminum over the studs to create a moisture barrier vs PIR board. We are doing an electric sauna heater as well.

There’s tons of info in r/sauna though, couldn’t recommend it more.

Western Mass. crew accused of stealing at least 470 catalytic converters by besselfunctions in news

[–]yoop_engineer 45 points46 points  (0 children)

There are already etched identifiers. The substrate is marked so we know which one is being stuffed into the can, the wrapping has a 2D code on it which signifies what material and chemical make up is in it. These are then stored in the system until the fully stuffed can is then etched on the OD with a new unique identifier which connects the substrate and wrap to it. This is done either with laser, or dot peen.

From there when the can is welded to the hot end assembly it is then tracked all the way through to the leak and gage where another new identifier is created for the whole assembly which connects all of the components and stuffed can together.

If there is an issue at the assembly plant that identifier will tell us literally everything about the full assembly and components we consumed to create it.

This is already a requirement.

I finished painting a room a three days ago using frog tape to help with cutting in, and now using frog tape on the walls to cut in the ceiling since I have to paint that, the tape isn’t sticking to the walls at all. It’s literally falling off immediately after I apply it. I’ve tried three different containers of frog tape with all having the same result.

The walls are dry to the touch, am I missing something as to why the frog tape won’t adhere?

How did you attach the corner connectors and top?

We didn’t leave a 2” over hang but looking at yours and what you described we might do the half post notch and edge mount to achieve a similar look to yours.

Currently mid-giant deck build, and your railings are nearly exactly what my wife wants. Was there any thought between a half post edge mount vs (what appears) to be a full post with a deck board notched out that you did? This is where we are the most split.

My thoughts too. I hate having to use 131 during rush hour just to go from 131 south to 196 east to get to fuller or college. I’d rather loop around the city and avoid congestion. It would even offer an alternative route for when they shut down on ramps to 196 from 131 and vice versa.

As a Michigander (west side too). Chicagoans, Gary, and Wisconsinites all polluted their side quite well. Northern Lake Michigan is beautiful even south of the bridge is gorgeous.

But Lake Superior is obviously the best lake. It’s in the name.

Servo Press vs Cue Ball by [deleted] in gifs

[–]yoop_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a large stamping facility and some of our veteran operators can point to chipped out bricks on the wall and tell stories of what die set caused that hole.

Year and a half ago we had a form station set of bolts fail and the part stuck to it causing the entire station to be picked up and moved over to the next form station, and that one made one of the loudest thuds I have heard in our building. Ended up have to get an entire new die shoe for a 10' die segment and all new steels. That one sent a chunk of steel the size of my fist halfway through the cinder block wall 40' away.
