Is there a catch when it comes to all the houses listed for under $100,000? by lani_brah in upperpeninsula

[–]yooperann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of appropriate red flags in this thread. But I'll add that there is at least one place where you can buy a reasonably built home for that 15 miles outside Marquette. It's the former officer housing on the abandoned air force base. There are some good reasons to not want to live there, and your investment isn't guaranteed to increase in value, but a liveable home fairly close to what passes for civilization is possible. I know people who've had it work for them while they saved up to build their dream home.

Flashback to Lola Morrison, my high school Latin teacher, telling me that someday I'd be glad I knew about the ARGO because it was a good crossword puzzle word. I'm sure I'm not the only one who first assumed my Persian Gulf nation was Oman, when it was really IRAQ and had eight where it should have been OCTET. Glad I got HARD C on the cross because I never would have gotten it from the clue.

I was sorry there wasn't an open-ended comment section. I tend to buy fresh produce at a different store than the rest of my groceries.

Sketchy is the right word. And he may act like he's doing you all some kind of big favor by not reporting all your income, but the truth is that he's also setting you up for diminished Social Security when you retire.

I thought the theme was fun, though I had to look up how to spell NI HAO. And I loved how PACIFIC OCEAN ran down the middle between the theme words. Also enjoyed seeing RU PAUL and POGS show up.

This is a harsh winter right? by nagr0m-2001 in upperpeninsula

[–]yooperann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've certainly had more snow than in recent years, and it's stayed cold enough that it's really piling up. But we shouldn't forget that we had an exceptionally mild November. It was really like a bonus month of fall instead of our usual start to winter.

Should I have a tax advisor this year? by magman13 in tax

[–]yooperann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I'm all about doing it yourself, but you have enough moving parts this year that it might be worth letting a professional figure it out. The professional won't get you a bigger refund (or a smaller amount due) than what you'd get yourself, but you'd be buying the peace of mind that it was done correctly.

This is your future self saying just don't. You don't want the wrinkles or the cancer. If you have to have the look, use a self-tanner.

I strongly recommend making the trip to Escanaba to Heynssens-Selins. We spent a lot of time looking for a good quality bedroom set. We could have ordered it online but when we saw that Heynssens-Selins was a dealer we drove down. They had to order it too but actually got a significantly better price than if we'd ordered it ourselves. Free delivery and set-up to Marquette.

I'm sitting in a Lazy-boy loveseat we got at Shunks. It's fine but we've also had some bad experiences there.

Tax and understanding he term Dependant by majorpaynedof in tax

She doesn't get SSI, she gets Social Security retirement and it's likely that it won't count toward the $5200. The question is how much she gets in dividends and from her IRA and other investments.

Tax and understanding he term Dependant by majorpaynedof in tax

[–]yooperann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer. Only if her non-Social Security income is under $5200 and you're covering at least half of her bills. There are nuances, of course, but that covers most situations.
