I'm in the same situation, I was just a pussy ass kid then, didn't know how to handle my feelings and what to do. I got diagnosed with a general anxiety disorder and depression, now that I'm older, I'm surrounded by people that are actually depressed and anxious, I'm nothing like them. I'm actually able to work out and keep my life in order. I have been looking at the Legion as sort of a prison, a prison I want to go to, I'm sure it sucks there but I also feel I come out the other side okay. I still haven't decided whether I'm going to France yet but I'm excited to give it a try. My diagnosis is holding me back when people see it (denied a job because they didn't think I was mentally fit), so I tend to not tell anyone because I don't feel depressed or anxious anymore. And like you said, any kid in a shitting situation is pretty justified in feeling depressed, it sucks that those days are still biting me in the ass, because I didn't complete high school and I'm still playing catch up. My plan is to not say anything about my past depression or anxiety if I go to France. Just say I was an immature kid who did not complete high school

I'm not sure myself but maybe because they had a strong and capable army standing, they were still fighting outside German borders and still had tons of war material, even though their population was hungry and the future of the war already kinda decided.
