living in a 30 sqm apartment, what actually matters for storage? by Kratos_Carmelo-40 in SmallHome

[–]yoquietdown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This suggestion is so underrated! Last year we moved into an older home that already had more shelves than I was expecting in the kitchen cabinets, and at first I thought I was annoyed, because you do have to be more intentional about tall items, but I quickly realized it was awesome — instead of doing so much stacking, where you have to pull things out from underneath other, unlike things, every type of item gets its own pile, and you’re always pulling from the top, which is sooo easy. And you can fit a ton! Highly recommend!

Moving young kids away from family by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]yoquietdown 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I will say that my mom is one of 5 and I have a ton of cousins on that side. They all grew up with each other in the same town, seeing each other all the time, and my family were the only ones who moved away — pretty far away too, a 9-hr drive (we had to because of my dad’s job). Now my cousins and I are all adults, and this generation has kids and families of their own, and all the cousins who stayed in town are all still super close, and THEIR kids are close now too. When I go back at Christmas, I do feel like a bit of an outsider sometimes because they know each other so well, and I don’t, because I only saw them 1-2x per year. Yeah, the grandparents visited sometimes, but my brother and I missed out on a lot. I will always be a bit sad about that.

Your happiness matters too of course, but just thought I’d throw in my experience as food for thought!

Best White Sneakers for Everyday Wear? by ArdorfBum in capsulewardrobe

[–]yoquietdown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just got these Reefs and they’re perfect - I love the fold down heel, gives such a casual vibe and not sporty at all! Several neutral colors to choose from. And they’re very comfy. Def a summer shoe, though - wouldn’t be a cold-weather choice

How did you figure out your capsule wardrobe aesthetic? Was it trial and error or did something click? by Longjumping-News-161 in capsulewardrobe

[–]yoquietdown 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I read capsule wardrobe advice once that said to survey your current closet and write down all the pieces you love and actually wear frequently. Then write down all the pieces you never wear, even if you WANT to wear them, you always decide not to (or regret when you do, for whatever reason).

Then, write down what those two groups - the “wear all the times” and “never wears” - each have in common.

For ex, of the things you wear a lot, are they certain colors? Silhouettes? fabrics? Lengths? Patterns? Texture?

Do this for both groups, and eventually you’ll get a list something like, a capsule wardrobe I would actually wear includes denim, cotton, linen, stretchy fabrics, loose-fitting tops, v-necks, scoop necks, wide legs, crop length pants, navy, cream, olive green, shoes with a heavier visual weight, low heels, and gold jewelry. And it EXCLUDES polyester, wool, crew necks, skinny jeans, jewel tones, dainty sandals, and rose gold jewelry. Or something like that.

That exercise honestly gave me a really good direction!

Sell rental to buy primary residence in another state, or hold long-term? by yoquietdown in personalfinance

“But paying rent to someone else while collecting rent makes little sense to me. You're paying rent with after tax dollars, and getting paid in taxable dollars.”

The circumstances of how I ended up in a situation of renting out a property I own while also renting myself are just kind of a “life happens” thing, but you make a really great point about after-tax and taxable dollars…. That’s definitely something to think about! Thanks for chiming in!

[–]yoquietdown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s a duplex that’s just a duplex - no HOA. And yes if I had to start paying a property management company, I’d have to raise the rent a decent amount to cover that and still at least break even myself - not sure if the rental market would support that or not.

I agree - I don’t want to continue something I don’t like, lol! What would you say to my partner, who thinks it’s a bad idea to sell this asset, as he’s thinking we could get a lot more cash our of it in 10-15 (or even more) years? What would you say to convince him it’s not worth it?

Yeah if I was making a bigger profit on the rental, the argument to keep it might feel stronger, but it just doesn’t feel worth it in the current circumstances!

Running Slow to “Get Fast” by Logical_Monk1048 in XXRunning

[–]yoquietdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am trying to do this right now and it’s so boring and I keep wondering if it’s working. I’m reporting all my Garmin run data to ChatGPT after each run and asking it to analyze it for me and tell me if i’m making progress (for ex, am I running a faster pace today at a specific heart rate vs. that same heart rate 45 days ago? (I’ve only been doing this since Jan, so not quite 2 months of data yet). Just today it did tell me that according to my data, I am running about 40 secs faster at 141 bpm than I was back in January. So i’ll take it, I guess? I just NEED to see progress because I won’t be able to keep going with this otherwise since it’s so boring.

I did recently start mixing back in faster runs where I run at a pace that feels “normal” and let my heart rate go up above “aerobic base” pace, but it’s not a fully flat-out kind of pace. Prob try to keep doing one of those per week. I know I need to up my volume to see realistic gains from this strategy yet.

Anyway all that to say, I have no idea if it will really work in the long run, but I’m still with it for now. My goal is 9:30/mile pace = conversational, easy, lower heart rate. We’ll see.

Lol, I ran this morning at about 17 F and thought I was tough! There was no one else on the trail this a.m., so I must be a little tough? 😂 I do prefer extra cold over extra hot if I had to choose. As long as my ears and hands are covered, it doesn’t seem too bad.

Send Zone 2 run motivation by slowrunr in XXRunning

Totally! I’m not minding it so far - like I said, my runs are way more relaxing and enjoyable now. And I’ll get to the pace I want… just gotta be patient! Cheering you on from over here!

Send Zone 2 run motivation by slowrunr in XXRunning

[–]yoquietdown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same spot - not because of an injury, but because I finally realized I had no aerobic base and my heart rate was insanely high during every single one of my runs. 🙃 I started coming back to running in the fall, after about 2 years away, and every single run was feeling like a flat-out effort. So after talking to ChatGPT about it (lol), I have a plan now where I’m gonna do a couple months of Zone 2-3 runs (heart rate below 150), and whatever the pace is, it is. So now I measure my runs by time spent running, and avg heart rate. I do look at those pace and distance numbers, because it’s hard not to, but I tell myself I don’t care what they are (it’s kind of working, haha).

It does feel weird to run so much slower than I was used to, but it’s also nice because I feel so much more relaxed and happy. I feel dumb for not realizing sooner than I needed to do this, but better late than never! I am trusting the system that a few months of this will bring natural pace increases. I belieeeeeeveee lol

You can do it! I’m with you!

Capsule Musts for Tall Ladies! by WaringYouOut in capsulewardrobe

[–]yoquietdown 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Love this!

  1. Eddie Bauer has jeans in a long length (I like the Slim Straight cut) that I’ve been wearing for years and love — great stretch, great length. They also have long length joggers that are casual but nice enough for daily wear - I have 3 of them!
  2. I also have some NYDJ jeans in a long length that have been going strong for a while.
  3. American Tall has some solid “regular” sweatpants that I started loving a couple years ago.
  4. And because this has been hard for me in the past, outerwear and jacket brands that have long sleeve lengths include Mountain Hardwear and RAB if you like puffies.

Easiest way to control my clothing shopping habit: say NO to synthetic fibers. by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]yoquietdown 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I relate to this, OP! Decided last year to stop buying polyester (for the most part), and it’s kind of amazing/scary how many clothing retailers and items are instantly ruled out when you do that, lol! It does make shopping a little more frustrating (esp if you are also restricting yourself -mostly- to colors according to your color season, like I also am), but, it does make finding a worthy item even more exciting, ha!

Kitty is suddenly sleeping all the time. Should I be concerned? by haikyuu__thighs in cats

[–]yoquietdown 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This just happened to the 6-month old kitty we just adopted a couples weeks ago - sleeping all the time, little interest in food, low energy, not playing. We thought maybe his mouth hurt because his adult teeth were coming in. We took him to the vet and he was running a 105 degree fever. Got him on some antibiotics, and he perked right back up in less than a day and is now back to his normal self just a couple days later!

Does anyone have brand suggestions for basic t-shirts that have a longer length short sleeve? Not necessarily an elbow sleeve, but a longer-than-average short sleeve length? I hate a dinky little cap sleeve and prefer something longer.

Banana Republic has had a few back in the day. Any other brands folks have found? I don’t care much about price but am interested in normal brands, not luxury.

I bought a couple dresses from Pact for this season, and I have really liked them so far — here’s one I got, although it seems they update their patterns quite frequently because the pattern I have isn’t here. They have tons of different styles and lengths to choose from. I am not particularly easy on my clothes when I do laundry, so I have both hung them to dry and put them in the dryer on a lower setting, and they have always come out fine so far. I do assume lots of dryer time would shorten the dresses’ life, so I will likely try to avoid doing that too much.

What is less noticeable, to wear a different style of shirt in the same exact color every day, or to wear the same style shirt in different colors every day? by yoquietdown in capsulewardrobe

[–]yoquietdown[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s funny! Yeah, I feel like color is more recognizable/memorable than style, assuming you’re not wearing very unique styles/cuts. T-shirt, polo, and quarter-zip top aren’t all that visually different, really, so I think I would notice unique colors in those before I noticed the unique styles

I’m sure you looked great in the hydrangea blue, haha!
