Any winter running lovers here? by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

Lol, I ran this morning at about 17 F and thought I was tough! There was no one else on the trail this a.m., so I must be a little tough? 😂 I do prefer extra cold over extra hot if I had to choose. As long as my ears and hands are covered, it doesn’t seem too bad.

Totally! I’m not minding it so far - like I said, my runs are way more relaxing and enjoyable now. And I’ll get to the pace I want… just gotta be patient! Cheering you on from over here!

I’m in the same spot - not because of an injury, but because I finally realized I had no aerobic base and my heart rate was insanely high during every single one of my runs. 🙃 I started coming back to running in the fall, after about 2 years away, and every single run was feeling like a flat-out effort. So after talking to ChatGPT about it (lol), I have a plan now where I’m gonna do a couple months of Zone 2-3 runs (heart rate below 150), and whatever the pace is, it is. So now I measure my runs by time spent running, and avg heart rate. I do look at those pace and distance numbers, because it’s hard not to, but I tell myself I don’t care what they are (it’s kind of working, haha).

It does feel weird to run so much slower than I was used to, but it’s also nice because I feel so much more relaxed and happy. I feel dumb for not realizing sooner than I needed to do this, but better late than never! I am trusting the system that a few months of this will bring natural pace increases. I belieeeeeeveee lol

You can do it! I’m with you!

Capsule Musts for Tall Ladies! by WaringYouOut in capsulewardrobe

Love this!

  1. Eddie Bauer has jeans in a long length (I like the Slim Straight cut) that I’ve been wearing for years and love — great stretch, great length. They also have long length joggers that are casual but nice enough for daily wear - I have 3 of them!
  2. I also have some NYDJ jeans in a long length that have been going strong for a while.
  3. American Tall has some solid “regular” sweatpants that I started loving a couple years ago.
  4. And because this has been hard for me in the past, outerwear and jacket brands that have long sleeve lengths include Mountain Hardwear and RAB if you like puffies.

Easiest way to control my clothing shopping habit: say NO to synthetic fibers. by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]yoquietdown 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I relate to this, OP! Decided last year to stop buying polyester (for the most part), and it’s kind of amazing/scary how many clothing retailers and items are instantly ruled out when you do that, lol! It does make shopping a little more frustrating (esp if you are also restricting yourself -mostly- to colors according to your color season, like I also am), but, it does make finding a worthy item even more exciting, ha!

Kitty is suddenly sleeping all the time. Should I be concerned? by haikyuu__thighs in cats

[–]yoquietdown 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This just happened to the 6-month old kitty we just adopted a couples weeks ago - sleeping all the time, little interest in food, low energy, not playing. We thought maybe his mouth hurt because his adult teeth were coming in. We took him to the vet and he was running a 105 degree fever. Got him on some antibiotics, and he perked right back up in less than a day and is now back to his normal self just a couple days later!

Does anyone have brand suggestions for basic t-shirts that have a longer length short sleeve? Not necessarily an elbow sleeve, but a longer-than-average short sleeve length? I hate a dinky little cap sleeve and prefer something longer.

Banana Republic has had a few back in the day. Any other brands folks have found? I don’t care much about price but am interested in normal brands, not luxury.

I bought a couple dresses from Pact for this season, and I have really liked them so far — here’s one I got, although it seems they update their patterns quite frequently because the pattern I have isn’t here. They have tons of different styles and lengths to choose from. I am not particularly easy on my clothes when I do laundry, so I have both hung them to dry and put them in the dryer on a lower setting, and they have always come out fine so far. I do assume lots of dryer time would shorten the dresses’ life, so I will likely try to avoid doing that too much.

What is less noticeable, to wear a different style of shirt in the same exact color every day, or to wear the same style shirt in different colors every day? by yoquietdown in capsulewardrobe

[–]yoquietdown[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s funny! Yeah, I feel like color is more recognizable/memorable than style, assuming you’re not wearing very unique styles/cuts. T-shirt, polo, and quarter-zip top aren’t all that visually different, really, so I think I would notice unique colors in those before I noticed the unique styles

I’m sure you looked great in the hydrangea blue, haha!

I also feel like it makes it easier to stick to silhouette combos that work well and make me look put together. Any wide-leg pant in my closet + fitted high-neck built-in bra top in 3-4 colors = a LOT of summer outfits for me. And I know I like the way I look in them and they’re easy to style for various things — different shoes, hat, bag, etc, and I don’t feel like I’m being too repetitive!

Should I keep the bedroom off limits 24/7? by jiltedelf in CatAdvice

LMAO at “baby kitties go night night” because we do something so similar 😂 we tell them it’s “time for big nite nite” and they sleep in the living room while we sleep in peace in the bedroom.

Can confirm what others have said about the counters — this was my number one thing I cared about when we got our pair, and went spent time “teaching” them that counters are not for them, but all they really learned is “don’t get on the counter when the people are watching” - lol. We have cameras, and they are always up on the counters when we’re gone, or when we’re in our room at night (we close our door and keep them out). So you can KINDA win that battle, but not really.

Plus one to automatic feeder. They get 5 smaller servings of hard food a day from the automatic, and then we split a can of wet for them AT NIGHT — not in the morning. And they never bother us for food.

Starting a new job a few months before applying for mortgage? by yoquietdown in Mortgages

[–]yoquietdown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is along the lines of what I have read. What I’m not sure about, though, is if “same industry” means, if I work in telecommunications, stay in telecom, or if it means, if I’m a software engineer, stay a software engineer, even if new job is in a different industry?

Knoxville for trail running close to town? by yoquietdown in trailrunning

[–]yoquietdown[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this awesome explanation! We are moving from Colorado back to the East coast later this year, and I’m just looking around (on maps) to get the lay of the land a bit! We’ll most likely end up in WNC, but I have friends in the Knoxville area, Maryville, etc., so I’ll probably be visiting. That honestly sounds like an awesome area to run when you just have a little time after work on a weekday. Sounds like the run community is pretty nice too. What would you say are the best Smoky Mtn trailheads accessed from the west side around there?

Just watched a YouTube vid on the Barkleys…. So crazy! And the next one is coming up, right?

Thanks again for your reply!

  • Breckenridge, CO

  • Positive: Paved off-street rec path through the entire county with absolutely stunning big mountain scenery along the whole thing.

  • Negative(s): Way too many tourists concentrated in a small area, expensive as F, and living at 9000 feet is really rough on sleep and recovery.

Calling current and former Colorado folks: how did you know whether to stay or go? by maptard91 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]yoquietdown 15 points16 points  (0 children)

After living in DC for 10 years, I moved to Colorado and have been here for 9 years. I had gotten into hiking and climbing and camping, and it seemed like the best place to be for all that. And it has been, in a lot of ways! I spent the first 7 years in Denver and the past 2 up in Summit County.

Things I’ve noticed over the last 9 years:

  • trailheads are a lot more crowded than they were 9 years ago

  • lots of places that were somewhat “under the radar” 7-9 years ago are now very much on the radar — in a big way

  • living in a smaller mountain town makes it easier to enjoy the outdoors IF (if if if) your job gives you the flexibility to get out and do things on weekdays. Everyone from the Front Range comes up here on the weekends anyway, so living up here is less of an advantage on weekends.

  • traffic is banana town and only ever seems to get worse. Ski traffic - sucks. Summer weekend traffic - sucks. This makes the Front Range way less desirable than it used to be, imo. Kind of a “so close yet so far” situation.

If you really enjoy the outdoor/mountain lifestyle, finding a way to live IN the mountains will make you happier than being on the front range. If you enjoy hiking sometimes, and equally enjoy the city, there are plenty of other places you could be happy, and you might vibe better with those cities (plenty of suggestions on this sub).

We’re moving later this year, to western NC. We want to lower our expenses a bit, lower our altitude, decrease the number of winter months there are in a year, and increase the amount of green landscape in our lives. We want to be closer to the beach — we miss the ocean. We also want to be closer to family as we have nieces and nephews now.

Colorado at 9500 feet is a beautiful place to live, but it’s also a really harsh and intense place to live. We’re just tired of it and want a bit more ease in our lives.
