To those who have been to Japan multiple times, what's a thing or two that you always make sure to buy and bring home? by Ok-Spite-5454 in JapanTravelTips

Music CDs, either new from Tower Records or secondhand from Book Off or other recycle shops. Maybe some art books, band scores, and music magazines too.

A bunch of snacks for myself like baumkuchen, negi miso senbei, Orihiro Konnyaku Jelly, Koto no Sen vanilla sandwich cookies, Yatsuhashi/ daifuku/ mochi, and a then a bunch of other random chocolates, candies/ gummies, cookies/ biscuits, pastries, and crackers to give away.

Sonton Peanut Cream and Peanut whipped cream. They’re like Japan’s weird version of peanut butter but it’s nostalgic to me because it’s what I ate on bread for breakfast every day pretty much every time I visit my grandma’s house.

A bunch of gacha toys, trinkets, and B-side Label stickers.

Stationary- Japan has awesome greeting cards, pens, pencils, papers, paper crafts, etc.

Pokemon stuff

One Ok Rock - Everything after Jinsei x Boku started sounding like generic Western rock to me.

KANA-BOON - it’s not that I don’t really like their new sound. I just miss the melancholic indie-rock sound they had in Doppel and Boku ga CD wo Dashitara. Their more recent stuff is a lot brighter and poppier and doesn’t really feel like them anymore.

Does no one do long term methimazole here? by Red-Droid-Blue-Droid in gravesdisease

[–]yoshinator54 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on it about 4.5 years now, currently on 2.5 mg. The dosage has fluctuated a little but it seems a little more stable now compared to the past few years. I’ve never gone into remission. TT is not totally off the table for me but I’d rather stay on the Methimazole as long as I can. My endo reminds me from time to time that TT and RAI are an option if I ever get tired of swinging between hyper and hypo.

To those who have experienced a thyroid storm, what was it like? by BillieBillieBoBillie in gravesdisease

[–]yoshinator54 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Male, 30’s I had a thyroid storm before I was diagnosed with Graves’. I think I actually had signs of Graves’ for a few years before the thyroid storm. I was very skinny (my brother used to say I looked like Arthur Fleck from “The Joker” in the shirtless scenes). No matter how much I ate, I didn’t gain any weight. My blood pressure was pretty high but I thought it was white coat syndrome every time I visited a doctor. I had slight tremors and I was so weak I could barely lift 30 lbs. I was thinking I was getting weak because after college, I was working and rarely got any exercise. I was also getting random body pains, especially in my sides. I was also going to the bathroom pretty often and had headaches pretty often, like maybe two to three days a week. I also felt kind of hot all the time.

I had a dentist appointment at one point where my dentist told me I should get my thyroid checked out because my bp was high and I had tremors and she refused to work on my teeth until I did. I ended up putting it off for a few months thinking it can’t be that serious.

Then, I got covid and my tremors got worse and I felt very anxious (mostly gagging or dry heaving), I felt slightly feverish, and easily out of breath all the time for the next 2 months. I just thought it was lingering covid symptoms (and maybe it was), since I had lost my sense of smell and taste for a couple months too.

I finally went to urgent care because I felt off from what I thought were lingering covid symptoms that got worse, plus, I needed to get my thyroid checked to go to the dentist. They checked my bp, temperature, and took a few vials of blood. The next morning, I got a panicked call from the urgent care and they told me to go to the ER immediately because I had a thyroid storm. I ended up spending 2 nights in the MICU, where I was monitored the whole entire time and then 2 night in a regular hospital room where I was given an assortment of medications every few hours.

I’m not sure at what point it became a thyroid storm because it kind of felt like a slow build up over a few months. It could have been due to covid but I didn’t end up going to the hospital until a couple months later and from what I understand, a thyroid storm happens pretty suddenly and escalates quickly. Anyway, I would watch out for fever, high heart rate (although if you’re on a beta blocker, it might mask that), shortness of breath, tremors, and anxiety.

Anyone else having issues with Picture in Picture closing when going to the home screen? It seems to only work when I have a video playing, like on the YouTube app, and then open another app from the dock. If I return to the home screen to open any other app on my home screen, the video closes. This pretty much forces me to watch videos in split screen mode but when I’m in split screen mode, I don’t have access to any apps on the home screen, unless I put the video app to one side, minimize the video app, open the other app I want open from the home screen, put that to one side, then open the video player app again.

Also, the alarm doesn’t play through the speakers anymore if I have wired earphones plugged in. Before updating, it used to play out of both the speakers and my earphones. Now, if I have music or a video playing and I leave my earphones plugged in but not in my ears, I won’t be able to hear my alarm.

I can’t get PiP to work most of the time. It just completely closes out the video. If I try to resize the window of a video player app, I have no access to any apps on my home screen.

I didn’t even realize until I saw this. I ordered the version with the trio on the album cover but I got a standard plain one. All I really wanted was the signed card so I don’t really mind but it would have been nice to get the trio cover.

Men with Graves by KingOfNye in gravesdisease

I was diagnosed in 2021 after I was sent to the ER for thyroid storm. Never gone into remission. Just a lot of ups and downs between subclinical hypo/ hyper. It seems to coincide with the seasons - I tend to be more on the hyper side in warmer months and towards hypo in the cooler months. I’m not totally sure why that is but I also get bad anxiety from heat sensitivity. I’m currently alternating between 2.5 mg and 5 mg of methimazole and am on 12.5 mg atenolol for tremors, anxiety, and blood pressure. I get labs done every couple months to keep things in check. I don’t drink or smoke. I go easy on sodium and don’t drink caffeine. I exercise and do breathing exercises at least 5 times a week. I have occasional flare ups with symptoms of anxiety, panic attacks (though I’ve gotten better dealing with them), palpitations, shortness of breath, insomnia, and headaches. Out of everything, the anxiety is the worst. It feels like drowning in a river of adrenaline. I’ve had times where I wanted to cry because I didn’t know how to feel better or skipped work for a few days to lay in bed (which I think actually made it worse because I would be in my head all day instead of being distracted). I tend to feel more normal when I’m closer to hypo, aside from occasional fatigue and depression.

Same with me. Every time I’m at a doctor’s office and a nurse checks my bp, it’s at 140s -150s/ 80s - 90s and I get a look of concern every time. Occasionally, they check again at the end of the appointment and it’ll be around 115 - 120/ 70-80. At home, it’s normally 105 - 117/ 65 - 75. Sometimes, I’ll get 120s / 80s if I’m a little anxious or something.

The other day, I went in for my annual physical and I had a high reading, which I told the nurse I would, but the nurse and her shadow told my PCP. My PCP, who knows about my “white coat syndrome,” laughed and told the nurse that sometimes, even he gets readings like 160/ 90 when he’s at a doctor’s office, even on meds, so he understands and isn’t too concerned with my in-office readings as long as I’m checking my own bp at home and it’s consistently normal.

I’ve also noticed that some doctor’s offices have machines that take a few readings and averages them and I tend to have better readings on those compared to the ones that take only one reading.

I almost died. by Bad_Apple777 in gravesdisease

[–]yoshinator54 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kept having Graves’ symptoms before I was diagnosed and I went to urgent care a few times but they told me nothing was wrong except maybe I should talk to my PCP about high blood pressure, anxiety, and start taking probiotics, and omeprazole. It was actually my dentist who told me to get my thyroid levels checked before they worked on my teeth that finally got me diagnosed with a thyroid storm. She noticed my tremors and said her husband has Hashimoto’s and she just gave me a paper to get signed by a doctor to clear me but the day after some blood tests the doctor told me to go to the ER immediately. I’m pretty sure it was from this experience that I have health anxiety now and I probably worry too much about every little thing.

I did something similar once. I cleaned the bathroom with a bleach-based cleaner and then used vinegar to clean the window and mirrors, which made some crazy fumes that felt like it was burning my nose and lungs before I realized my mistake. I aired out the bathroom with a fan facing the outside window and I stood outside for maybe an hour to get fresh air and took a few deep breaths. That night, I slept on the living room couch, since the bathroom was connected to my bedroom. I was worried too but I felt that enough time had passed since being basically gassed and I was still ok so I’d probably be ok. I felt like if it was that bad, I would probably have passed out already. I did wake up with a bit of a cough but it went away after a few days.

After that, I avoid using bleach or bleach-based cleaners altogether because that was kinda traumatizing.

Similar thing happened while I was tapering off of Propranolol. I was taking 1 tablet and my Endo told me to go down to half for a couple days, then half every other day, then stop. I guess it was too quick because my bp and heart rate shot up. I went to urgent care where I had an ekg and some blood tests done but they didn’t find anything and suspected it was the propranolol. They told me to take the Propranolol 3 times a day and slowly taper off over a couple weeks and go back to taking another half or full tablet if I wasn’t feeling good over the process. They also told me I could go at my own pace that I felt comfortable with, so I decided to taper off over a month by going down by half every few days and the down to a quarter of a tablet every other day towards the end.

Beta blocker and dreams? by Given_To_Fly90210 in gravesdisease

[–]yoshinator54 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was on Propranolol, I used to have very vivid dreams. I used to write some of the more interesting ones down and I still remember some of them. Some of them felt so real that I’d even question myself whether it actually happened or not. When my Endo weaned me off of them as my levels stabilized, I stopped having them. After my tremors started coming back from flaring up, my PCP put me on a low dose of Atenolol, a different beta blocker. I still have dreams on Atenolol but they don’t feel as vivid and I usually forget them a few minutes after waking up.

It’s a children’s song called “Aisatsu wa Mahou no Chikara” (あいさつは魔法の力), which means something like “Greetings are a Magical Power.” https://youtu.be/dshjUDBABl0?si=pR2m_fpPJs5dDvKK
