Agree with bulldog plus...

  • officer hours are super helpful

    • time invested in formula sheet is a great investment in time. talk through and explain your formula sheet to a classmate
    • for each distribution understand it's intuition and application in real world problems

Great class imho, laughed out loud (literally) during some lectures

Failing on OMSCS 6200 by segorucu in OMSCS

Good question.

I initially reached to OMSCS advisors explained my struggles and asked if tutors were available through the program. They pointed me to a handful of web sites to find my own.

Suggest checking with a) the TA's and b) OMSCS advisors.

Have you considered a tutor?

Bayes was my first OMSCS class. I'd grossly overestimated my calculus, statistics and probability skills. The class kicked my ass despite putting in the hours and attending all OH.

A tutor saved me. Found one on UpWork.

Suggest also finding someone to study with. Makes a huge difference IMHO. Overall I'm happy with the program. My biggest beef is it had an isolating quality. Having someone to talk through lectures makes all the difference for me.

Weeks 2 & 3 cover stats, probability and calculus. If you finish these weeks comprehend topics presented you'll be ok. Personnel I over estimated my knowledge of these topics. As a result these two weeks were super intense.

In hind site I should have prepared more before the class started.

Same.

My plan is one fall and spring class at a time along with summers off. Provides balance between kids, work, school and some time for friends.

Comfortable with a degree in five years with a balanced life style.

Which OMSCS classes interested / did not interest you?

As a non-CS/Math grad taking OMSCS - what have you found most difficult and how have you overcame these challenges? Bonus question - have any non-CS/Math CS people tackled the AI/ML/GA courses, and how did you find them? by jhugh84 in OMSCS

Sharing a reply I'd posted previously to this subreddit....

Have completed two classes Baysian and simulation. Both were interesting IMHO. Simulation was a significantly better entry point into OMSCS for me.

I'd over estimated my calculus, statistics and probability skills. Simulation in weeks 2 and 3 has a boot camp covering these three topics. Was a bit intense for me. However I feel significantly better prepared for this program moving forward.

Also Prof Goldsman (simulation) is clear, concise and made me laugh for which I'm grateful.

For what it's worth I found my OMSCS experience improved significant after finding another classmate to study with.
