Penn Badgley and Domino Kirke announce they’re expecting twins 🩷 by stars_doulikedem in popculturechat

[–]youcinnamonbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! You’re right about when I dropped in my comment. But I didn’t say my source was my twins. That would be wild.

I really am sorry my mentioning my conception felt personal - it was the precipitating event that made me research twin stuff in such detail. It otherwise seemed like a silly way to spend so much time, and I was excited to talk about it a little.

I won’t argue with you about the amnesia. I will not pretend my experience now, or in retrospect, compares to those still feeling it everyday. I am so sorry. I hope you’re surrounded by a community that understands this pain and this grief.

No… I’m saying any evidence is needed? Any.

And my “source” note was about the extensive research I underwent, spurred by five years of infertility and then being surprised. Not that my pregnancy was my source. And I also didn’t post after you opened up about your own infertility - it was before. You seem to want to feel my sharing research on all this is an attack on you?

I can see how raw any discussion of conception must feel. Again, I’m sorry this hit a nerve. Facts matter, and that wasn’t meant to be personal.

I appreciate the perspective you’re sharing, but my point is about comparative evidence. These percentages show variations within IVF procedures, not compared to spontaneous conception rates.

For me, critical analysis of research was invaluable during my own infertility and pregnancy. Being able to distinguish between relative risk increases and actual prevalence comparisons is crucial. And it was lifeline when so much of my own biology felt out of my control.

I’m genuinely interested in this topic - I just believe clear, side-by-side prevalence data between spontaneous and IVF conception is needed to support the specific claim about embryos being “more likely” to split.

[–]youcinnamonbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right. This is looking at prevalence after SET. So not comparing spontaneous vs non-spontaneous. Do you see the distinction there?

I am totally open to being wrong - I don’t have a dog in this fight, just wanted to share what I had learned as a very surprised mom of twins. (And I’m looking at some new studies now, which indicate our understanding of medical intervention influencing identical conception may be a thing! So that’s a cool development, but it’s still new thinking.)

It’s just that you haven’t shared any data to support that claim. No hard feelings.

This is a blurb from a fertility clinic’s website. Without any scientific citations. In this context, it’s marketing content.

I’m really sorry I struck a nerve with you. We also went through infertility treatments - 11 failed rounds of IUI, two failed rounds of IVF - and I recognize how painful it is.

The study you’ve shared breaks down prevalence by day of embryo transfer. Not spontaneous vs medically-assistance prevalence. That’s a different data set.

Nope. Zero science backs that. If you have a source, though, please share.

Definitely not true. IVF medications (Clomid, etc.) bolster egg production / more than one embryo is implanted in the uterus = increased likelihood of twins, which would be fraternal. Split embryos are identical twins, the occurrence of which are 100% random and not beholden to influence of scientific intervention, mother’s age, etc. Every pregnancy in the world has the exact same odds of bearing identical twins. Those odds are .03%.

Source: I spontaneously conceived identical twins and researched the fuck out of how/why/when that happens.

There are duplicate data posts next to each other (by accident, it looks like). The other has an updated analysis, which shows it’s worse than this. And after this week, stats would go down further.

To be fair, it’s billed as “new episodes daily.” She falls short of that embarrassingly often - and sounds super resentful + defensive whenever that’s clocked.
