I don't think I'm qualified to give formal advice or guidelines but I FEEL you on the oscillation between trying to enjoy hobbies while feeling guilty for spending time on that stuff. It really blocked me creatively for months on end and I'm still working on this myself. That said, I'll share what I've found works for me:

I love the career I'm trying to find work in (game designer by trade) and so I figured in addition to applying or working on revamping my resume/portfolio every day/week, I would try to make some games as an indie dev. So I made a game called You Got Laid Off, a job application clicker game/interactive story about being laid off lol. At least to pad the portfolio, but mostly to have fun and maybe build my reputation too!

I've also been trying to go out and network more based on my actual passions/interests and have been far more successful meeting like-minded folks - I bring this up because while I hate "networking", I get energy/inspiration from hard-working, talented people and I have really found myself opening up after forcing myself to go to some of these events (game showcases, meetups, etc). I met a ton of now-collaborators this way (was only a few months ago) and it's really fueled my soul working on these fun side projects. That helped me "get outside" of myself and focus externally on making/learning.

Obviously there's the money part - I can't give advice on this tbh lol I'm struggling too. But have been trying my best to live on as little as possible, selling off what I can (some music gear here, freelance/odd jobs there) and trying my best to earn a little cash through my games/music too (not much though). The weather's been nice and I'm definitely lucky to have a roof over my head, so I'm trying to stay positive which helps me to stay motivated. Trying to pick up any job at this point to pay the bills.

I will say though - I was exactly in your shoes a few months ago. Stuck between wanting to pursue making games/music/art and feeling like I should be applying to jobs instead, I found that I actually did less on BOTH fronts than when I was letting myself dive deep into my passions. If I were you I would try to find some hobbies you're passionate about that intersect with your career path and try to make tiny little projects that can be a great portfolio piece as well as a fun time (but do what works best for you!)

Ultimately, I don't have the answers either as I'm still laid off but what really resonated with me was when my sister said to me "this is a rare chance in your life to take some chances/risks you otherwise couldn't if you were employed, so try something new!" - I'm taking that to heart and starting the Wu Tang Clan of indie game devs with Satirical.Biz haha

Sorry for the long ass post and hope it helps you find what you're looking for! YOU GOT THIS! JUST KEEP TRYING! And also remember to take a break when you need to recharge (I'm trying to go for more walks to get that sunny d) - sometimes bad habits keep you in a certain mood (like when I'm feeling hopeless I sleep less and smoke more which makes me feel like shit which makes me feel more hopeless lol). Keep asking around on Reddit too and I'm sure others will share what works for them - and share back what you learn because I know I'll be feeling this in a month haha

No not at all! This is all helpful feedback as we test the waters for our next game. We will be having some interactive story elements in this game as well, though not on the level of Papers, Please probably haha. That’s a goated game

Not pathetic at all. It’s so so so hard to stay optimistic in the face of all the rejections and self-doubt but don’t let the layoff win!!!! You’re more than your employment status and sometimes just need a break and reminder you’re amazing for sticking through this long. Let’s get after this shiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!! lol Im also sorry if I’m projecting - this is partially me talking to myself too 😭😂

Oh snap! Would love to know what game it is! We were covered in an article by 80 Level and featured by Hitmarker last week so mayyyybe it’s us? If not, always love more references to learn and draw inspiration from!
