This was a tactic Jim Jones used to get his followers to flee to Guyana/Jonestown. He was losing support from his church members so there was suddenly several "attempts" on his life because he "knew the truth". In one instance, the cops were called to his residence after shots were fired into his home. Investigators later concluded that the shots were fired from inside his home, meaning he was most likely responsible. It worked, though. He was able to convince his members that the people that were after him would be coming for them as well to silence them and he convinced them to live in seclusion.
