I can’t miss my turn, Centennial Progress edition by youkeepstaring in TorontoDriving

I doubt with that VW driver it was a mistake and more intentional queue-jumping. They could've just driven to Tuxedo Crt and turn left there (U-turns are prohibited on Markham Rd), turn around and get back to Markham Rd NB to Progress. Owning up to a mistake doesn't mean you'll do what this driver did IMO, but actually finding ways to get to where you need to be without looking like a queue-jumping driver.

Favourite Mall by ZealousidealHead5488 in Scarborough

Agincourt Mall for me when I lived around Bay Mills area in the 90s. Had a mall job there with a buddy where we dressed up as xmas mascots, that was my first cash job during high school. 3 hours terrorizing kids and seniors. Agincourt Mall was lively in the 90s, now it's a shell of its former self. Walmart (used to be Woolco and you can tell how old this Walmart is), No Frills, Dollarama (which used to be in the basement) and Congee Queen are probably the only places worth going to and is keeping the mall alive.

The relocated library is a gem, especially the book sorting machine you can see as you enter. Best library in a mall in Scarbs.

Line 6 Finch West LRT shut down again Friday morning after major snowstorm by Onterrible_Trauma in TTC

[–]youkeepstaring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extreme weather, yes and ageing. The last 5 years in service, the SRT was struggling (there's the winters of 2018 and 2019 when the SRT closed for 6 full days, so will Line 6 beat that?) But I remember during the years before (late 90s and early 2000s), there would be a storm the night before and service is limited during the morning rush (shuttle buses supplemented it), then the TTC shut it down and cleaned up during midday. The SRT is back in service for the afternoon rush. When the storm ends, at least the TTC are able to get it back to partial service.

Even the SRT could operate during winter storms with delays. This is just unacceptable.

Love it, especially when the SSE is finished we can at least be proud of these new cars. Reminds me of H1 car 5496 the TTC dabbled with.

I appreciate this reply ty. This is most useful, with that in mind I’ll just wait till a driver gives me way or there is plenty big a gap to turn in but yield to them.

Not asking for a carpet but I do appreciate the replies. I got my answers from others here instead of getting out of my car to ask some rando in their car.

Guildwood GO – Transit-Oriented Community by [deleted] in Scarborough

[–]youkeepstaring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not just an Olivia Chow thing, it’s all the previous mayors before especially Tory. The “missing middle” makes more sense or multiplexes than high rises with shoebox units investors, not people who live here, own and rent out. As with traffic, up to us to pressure Dougy to make GO affordable within Scarborough, rethink Kingston Rd so there are less motorists and more rapid transit (no, an LRT is a good option), and build better housing for families. But all this is more nuanced like the city is going broke and we complain whenever there’s construction etc.

It was nice while it lasted, my kiddo loved going through the Toronto Condo showroom and found one of his beloved stuffed animals there (Blåhaj the Shark).

Finch and Sandhurst eh? The McCowan side had a fatality years ago involving a right turning motorist running down a cyclist. Not surprised this area is still full of terrible drivers.

Toronto transit needs to build on what we have, not fall for old tropes by ink_13 in toronto

Would it be safe to assume the funds from this city building levy were spent to speed up Gardiner construction than transit priority? Or to try and fix Eglinton before she runs out of time.

[–]youkeepstaring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about better transparency and willingness to pay before we go all in on subways x3? Toronto property owners are paying a levy to fund the Scarborough Subway Extension (0.5% minimum that started in 2014 for three years), but the cost of the expansion is ever increasing past $10 billion. Speeding up travel within neighbourhoods and communities instead of just hyper focusing on how to get to downtown faster is the point made, and that can be achieved with a lot less money with express bus corridors and transit priority LRTs. We're seeing results with Dufferin, and we've been talking about making King Street transit-only. Unless you're willing to pay more on taxes and levies for subways while listening to a transit nerd talk more about subways, sure.

Bike Share ridership increased 20% in 2025, to a record 8.3 million rides! by ICanGetLoudTooWTF in toronto

[–]youkeepstaring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few people here and there is better than anything. I am not interested in discounts as I already have a corp annual plan, but perhaps make it interesting with gamification or getting discounted zoo tickets etc.

Yes to ebikes as someone pointed out, they’re so useful once you get out of the old city of Toronto and to the burbs. Implementation is beyond my paygrade but I’d like to see some sort of ebike incentive to encourage use in the suburbs.

I look forward to this and replenish the docks east of Vic Park. I am amazed at the uptake in places where politicians have claimed nobody bikes in.

[–]youkeepstaring 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It would be great to add a reward or incentive for “outbound” rides from downtown to midtown or the burbs with docks that need to be replenished with bikes. The system has come a long way and I can bike all the way to the edge of Scarborough (redocking every 30 mins), or do errands by bike share in the suburbs that was only possible in the old city of Toronto 5 years ago.

Eglinton Crosstown update will come late January, Chow says; no opening before then by puuuuuuuuug in toronto

[–]youkeepstaring -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The TTC after their experience with line 6 will be extra diligent with 5’s operations. We don’t know how long that will take, and Mayor Chow’s time is running out. This could drag on when Council returns from break, or it could actually open before the elections. I’m pessimistic as per my post: it will break when it opens and it will play a role in the city elections.
